Breville claims up to 25 litres of water removal per day without the filter and recommends it for rooms up to 60 m². Those figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results; public CHOICE information does not reveal the measured performance needed to confirm how effectively or efficiently it works.
What is the Breville Smart Dry 2-in-1 Viral Protect?
It is a refrigeration, or compressor, dehumidifier with an air-purification system. Breville’s current product page identifies it as BAD708, while its instruction book and replacement-filter page use LAD708. The identifiers appear across Breville’s own materials for this product; check the rating label on your unit and match the model when looking up documentation or parts. Breville’s product page and its replacement-filter page use the different codes.
CHOICE’s public product record also identifies LAD708 as a refrigeration dehumidifier. It lists a weight of 14 kg and a two-year warranty, but its expert rating and measured performance fields are restricted to members. CHOICE’s public listing therefore does not establish a test-based verdict on extraction or energy use.

Capacity and room coverage: what the claims mean
Breville recommends the appliance for rooms up to 60 m² and claims it can extract up to 25 litres of water per day. The extraction figure is specified for operation without the filter. Both numbers are manufacturer claims; the product page does not state a publication year, and the public CHOICE record does not provide accessible measured results to independently verify them. A maximum daily extraction claim should not be read as a guarantee of that output in every room or operating condition.

The 60 m² recommendation is a useful starting point, not proof that the appliance will control humidity evenly throughout every space of that size. Layout, moisture load and operating conditions matter, and the available public evidence does not quantify how those variables affect this model.
Purification and filter replacement
Breville lists a washable pre-filter, an AntiViral HEPA-13 filter and an activated-carbon filter. On the replacement-filter page, the company says filter material tested under ISO 18184 reduced SARS-CoV-2 viral particles by 99.97% and influenza A viral particles by 99.99%. These are Breville’s claims about filter material, not evidence of a clinical benefit or a whole-room health outcome.

Breville names the LAD070 as the replacement filter for both LAD708 and LAD358, and recommends changing it every 4 to 6 months or 2,160 hours, depending on use frequency and air quality. Its manual says to use only the original filter intended for the appliance. At the time represented by the supplied product information, Breville’s Australian page showed the LAD070 at AU$64.95 and out of stock; price and availability can change. Check the current listing before budgeting for replacement.

Breville lists Wi-Fi control through the Home Connect app, compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant, standalone purifier operation, laundry mode and continuous drainage. The appliance includes a 1 m drain hose. These features broaden its possible uses, but they have not been independently assessed here, so their practical convenience, reliability and performance should not be treated as verified.

Continuous drainage can be useful when you want water directed to a suitable drain rather than emptied from the tank, provided the hose can be routed appropriately. Laundry mode is intended for drying clothes indoors, but the available information does not establish how quickly it dries laundry or how much energy it uses.

That evidence gap matters because a high extraction figure alone does not show how much moisture a unit removes in a real room, how much electricity it consumes to do so, or how noisy it is. No independently measured noise result is established in the public information cited here.
Who should consider it?
The LAD708/BAD708 is worth considering if you want one appliance that combines dehumidification and filtration, and value the listed app and voice controls, laundry mode or continuous-drain option. Its stated coverage and maximum extraction rate offer a basis for an initial comparison, as long as you treat them as Breville claims rather than proven real-world results.
It is a harder recommendation if your decision depends on independently verified extraction, energy efficiency, noise or value over time. Before choosing it, compare accessible test results for alternatives and account for the recurring cost and availability of the LAD070 filter. The public evidence available here is not enough to call the unit a proven high performer.
Verdict
Breville’s Smart Dry 2-in-1 Viral Protect is a feature-rich combination dehumidifier and purifier, with useful listed functions and clearly identified replacement-filter compatibility. But its headline capacity and coverage figures remain manufacturer claims, and the public independent listing does not disclose the test results needed for a confident performance verdict.
