The Breville Nespresso Vertuo Plus BNV420 is a one-touch coffee machine for Nespresso Vertuo capsules, with four listed drink sizes and automatic capsule recognition. Breville marks this Australian model as discontinued, so it is best considered only when you find a specific unit at a seller you trust—not as a model you can assume is readily available. Before buying, check capsule availability where you live, the exact tank configuration, and the seller’s warranty and return terms.
What the BNV420 does
The BNV420 belongs to Breville’s Vertuo Plus family. It reads the code on a capsule and uses that information to select brewing parameters. Breville describes its Centrifusion system as spinning a capsule at up to 7,000 rotations per minute; that is a manufacturer description, not independent evidence that the coffee tastes better than coffee from another machine.
Breville lists a motorised head that opens and closes, automatic capsule ejection, and automatic shutoff. These features make the brewing routine simple, but the machine still requires compatible capsules and regular cleaning.

Breville’s Australian product page lists four pour volumes. These are the published formats for this model and market; they do not establish that every capsule produces every size.

The BNV420 is built for Nespresso Vertuo capsules. Check that a capsule package explicitly says “Vertuo” before purchasing; the available product information does not establish that Original-line capsules fit. Capsule choice is therefore a practical buying constraint: consider which Vertuo coffees are available locally and what they cost per cup. Current prices and local stock vary and were not established here.
Size, tank and counter fit
Breville gives the machine’s dimensions as 14.2 × 42.3 × 32.5 cm and describes its construction as metal and plastic. Those dimensions are useful for planning, but allow room to operate the head and access the water tank. The official manual gives dimensions that vary with tank orientation.

Do not assume every BNV420 has the same reservoir. The Nespresso manual lists 1.2 L and 1.8 L tank configurations across the Vertuo Plus family, while CHOICE lists 1.7 L for its BNV420 entry. These figures may reflect different configurations or measurement conventions. Check the tank on the exact unit and confirm that its position works for your counter.

The BNV420 brews coffee; it does not have an integrated milk frother. Nespresso suggests pairing it with an Aeroccino3 for hot or cold frothed milk. Treat that as an optional separate accessory, not a brewing requirement. If you regularly make milk drinks, include the cost, storage space and extra cleaning of a separate frother in your decision.

- Useful Tips: Please kindly note that do not brew coffee immediately after frothing milk. Cleaning and descaling
Nespresso’s care guidance calls for regularly refilling and cleaning the removable water tank, and emptying and rinsing the used-capsule container and drip tray. Nespresso Australia recommends descaling the Vertuo Plus every 6 to 12 months. Follow the instructions for the exact machine and use a descaler confirmed as compatible with it.
Is a discontinued BNV420 worth buying?
Breville’s Australian product page marks the BNV420 discontinued, and CHOICE also lists it as discontinued. That does not prove that no retailer has stock; availability is seller- and market-specific. Breville’s product page lists a tasting box of Vertuoline capsules as an included accessory, but contents may differ for a used machine or an individual seller’s bundle. Confirm what is actually included.
