The Breville Barista Pro BES878BSS4JAN1 is a hands-on espresso machine for buyers who want an integrated grinder and manual control, with a faster-heating system and LCD workflow than the Barista Express. Its strongest case is convenience between shots and more grinder adjustment—not automatic drink-making. Whether it is worth choosing depends on the current New Zealand price difference and whether those workflow changes matter to you.

What is the Barista Pro BES878BSS4JAN1?

Breville New Zealand lists this exact regional model as the Barista Pro™ BES878BSS4JAN1. It combines an espresso machine with an integrated conical burr grinder, so grinding and brewing happen in one appliance. The workflow remains semi-automatic: you dose and tamp the coffee, operate the portafilter, and texture milk yourself.

Breville lists a 54 mm portafilter, 30 grind settings, PID temperature control, volumetric shot control and manual milk texturing. The machine also provides low-pressure pre-infusion and instant hot water according to its manual. These features offer control over preparation, but they do not make it a one-touch milk-drink machine. Breville New Zealand product page Breville instruction manual

How fast does it heat up?

Breville says the ThermoJet heating system reaches optimum extraction temperature in three seconds. That is the manufacturer’s stated time to extraction temperature, not an independently measured guarantee of how quickly the whole machine is ready for every step of a drink. The claim addresses heating for extraction; it does not eliminate the hands-on preparation or milk-texturing workflow. Breville New Zealand product page

Barista Pro vs. Barista Express

The Barista Express BES870 is the most relevant alternative. A 2026 independent comparison describes the Pro’s differences as ThermoJet heating, 30 grind settings rather than 16, and an LCD instead of the Express’s analog pressure gauge. These are the reviewer’s comparison points, not results from a controlled side-by-side test. Coffeeness comparison, updated September 29, 2026

When the Pro’s differences are useful

The Pro is a better fit if you value its claimed quick extraction-temperature readiness, want more grind-setting steps for dialing in beans, or prefer an LCD-led workflow. More settings give you finer adjustment choices, though the number alone does not establish better coffee; grind, dose, distribution and technique still shape the result.

When the Express may be the better choice

If the Express is meaningfully cheaper where you shop and you are comfortable with its gauge-based interface and fewer grinder settings, the Pro’s upgrades may not justify the premium. Check both machines’ live regional prices and bundles before deciding: the available evidence does not establish a universal price gap or universal winner.

How much control does it give you?

The integrated grinder supports adjustable grind size and amount, and the manual describes hands-free grinding and a Razor dose-trimming tool. For brewing, the machine has programmable volumetric controls, adjustable shot temperature and PID temperature control. These features give you ways to refine preparation, but they do not remove the need to learn a repeatable routine.

Milk is manual. You position and operate the steam wand to texture milk rather than selecting a finished latte or cappuccino and leaving the machine to prepare it. If automatic milk preparation is essential, compare machines in an automatic or one-touch category instead; the sources cited here do not establish a specific alternative model.

What comes in the New Zealand package?

Breville’s NZ listing includes a water filter and cleaning kit, along with baskets, a dosing funnel, the Razor trimming tool and a 480 ml stainless-steel milk jug. Package contents can differ across markets and listings, so confirm the exact contents for the BES878BSS4JAN1 before purchase. The included jug and dosing funnel also mean those accessories are not necessary first-day upgrades for this listed package. Breville New Zealand product page

  • 20 Bar Pump + 1350W Heating – Start Faster, Brew with More Control 20 Bar Pump + 1350W Heating – Start Faster, Brew with More Control: The pump sends pressurized hot water through finely ground coffee, while the heating system reduces the wait before brewing. With the right grind, dose, and tamp, a typical espresso shot runs for about 25–30 seconds once preheated, making single or double shots easier to prepare at home.
  • 3–10s Pre-Infusion – Help Water Reach the Grounds More Evenly: Choose a pre-infusion time from 3 to 10 seconds to gently wet the coffee before extraction begins. When switching beans, roast levels, or grind sizes, this added control helps water move more evenly through the grounds and makes shot results easier to adjust.
  • Built-In Grinder with 20 Settings – Grind and Brew in One Machine: Choose from 20 grind settings to match different beans, roast levels, and espresso recipes. Whether trying a new bag of coffee or adjusting how quickly the shot flows, the built-in grinder keeps grinding and brewing in one setup, saving counter space and preparation time.
  • 3-Level PID Control, 197–205°F – Adjust Heat to Your Coffee: Choose from three brewing temperatures to match different roast levels and flavor preferences. Adjust the temperature for straight espresso, milk drinks, or iced espresso drinks, while PID control helps keep the water temperature steadier so each cup is easier to repeat.
  • Steam Wand for Lattes & Cappuccinos – Make Milk Drinks at Home: Use the steam wand to heat and texture milk for lattes, cappuccinos, and other milk-based drinks. With the grinder, espresso brewer, and steam wand combined in one machine, you can prepare morning coffee or drinks for guests without adding separate appliances.

Cleaning and ongoing ownership

The US instruction manual recommends replacing the water filter after two months. It also says to use fresh, cold tap water and warns against highly filtered, demineralized or distilled water because it may affect coffee taste. These instructions come from the US manual; follow the guide supplied with your New Zealand machine and account for your local water conditions. Breville US instruction manual

Routine cleaning is part of owning a manual espresso machine, and a cleaning kit is listed in the NZ package. For replacement filters or optional 54 mm accessories, confirm that the product is compatible with your exact regional model rather than relying on a generic listing.

Which model and warranty should you check?

Regional identifiers are not interchangeable. Breville’s New Zealand page lists BES878BSS4JAN1, while its US listing identifies BES878BSS1BUS1. The US page’s electrical specifications, dimensions and warranty apply to that US listing, not automatically to the New Zealand unit. Breville lists a two-year limited product warranty on the NZ page; check its current terms and the seller’s details before buying. Breville New Zealand product page Breville US product page

Verdict: Is the Barista Pro worth it over the Express?

Choose the Barista Pro if its quicker-heating claim, additional grind settings and LCD workflow solve real frustrations in your daily routine—and the current local price makes that worthwhile. Choose the Barista Express if those refinements are not important enough to justify the price difference. Either way, expect to do the grinding, portafilter preparation and milk texturing yourself; the Pro is an integrated manual espresso setup, not an automatic café-drink machine.
