The Breville Barista Express BES870 is a semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in conical burr grinder. It is a strong fit if you want an all-in-one starting setup and are willing to learn to grind, dose, tamp, pull shots, and steam milk yourself. It is not a one-touch coffee maker: its manual workflow, counter space, and integrated grinder are meaningful trade-offs.
What the Barista Express BES870 is
Breville’s current US product page lists the machine as the BES870XL, while the official manual is titled for the BES870. The Barista Express combines an espresso brewer and grinder, so a separate grinder is not required to start with whole beans. Because suffixes, voltage, warranty terms, and included accessories can vary by market or seller, match the exact listing to your location before buying.
The workflow is hands-on: adjust grind size and dose, tamp the coffee, start and monitor extraction, then texture milk with the steam wand. Breville lists a pressure gauge, adjustable shot-volume controls, low-pressure pre-infusion, PID temperature control, and Thermocoil heating. The manual documents a stainless-steel portafilter, single- and dual-wall baskets, an integrated tamper, milk jug, Razor dose-trimming tool, cleaning disc, cleaning tools, and water-filter holder and filter. The newer US listing also names a dosing funnel attachment and cleaning tablets. Bundles can vary, so check the actual package contents before ordering an accessory.
How it performs as a buying choice
The integrated grinder is convenient, with a long-term trade-off
Combining grinder and machine reduces the equipment you need to buy and fit on a counter to get started. But the grinder is part of the appliance: if you later want a different grinder, you cannot replace or upgrade that component independently. A separate-grinder setup offers more flexibility, especially if you already own a capable grinder.

Manual control suits learners, not convenience-first routines
You choose the grind and dose, tamp, and manage the shot rather than pressing one button for a finished drink. The pressure gauge and physical controls provide feedback during that learning process. If your priority is repeatable one-touch drinks or automatic milk texturing, a guided or automatic alternative is a better category to compare.

The BES870 has a manual steam wand, not an automatic milk-texturing system. That gives you direct control over steaming, but it also means learning the technique and doing the work for each milk drink.

Allow space for the all-in-one
At the manufacturer-listed 15.9 × 13.1 × 12.4 in and 22.09 lb, it is a substantial countertop appliance rather than a compact brewer. Measure the available surface and clearance before purchase, including room to use the hopper and steam wand.
Who should consider it—and who should look elsewhere
- Consider it if you want an integrated grinder, prefer physical controls, and are prepared to practice espresso preparation and milk steaming.
- Look elsewhere if you want automatic milk frothing, one-touch drinks, or a smaller machine.
- Compare grinder-free machines if you already own a good grinder or want the option to upgrade your grinder independently.
For a comparison, focus on grinder arrangement, how much of the brewing process is automated, milk workflow, footprint, and the exact market version. Current review material says newer ThermoJet models heat faster than the Express, but check the exact model specifications before making a direct speed comparison. Cafe & Crema’s editorial review rates the Express 8.8/10 and places it at #4 in its under-$1,000 guide; those are that publisher’s judgments, not standardized lab results.
