A 2014 experiment showed that a chiral molecule’s breakup can depend on whether incoming electrons are polarized one way or the other. In gas-phase bromocamphor, the measured bromide-production asymmetry was energy dependent and on the order of 3 × 10−4. The result demonstrates that a proposed electron-driven mechanism is physically possible under laboratory conditions; it does not explain why life favors particular molecular handedness.
What the 2014 experiment found
Physicists J. M. Dreiling and T. J. Gay studied dissociative electron attachment: an incoming electron attaches to a molecule and helps break it apart. Their target was chiral bromocamphor, described in contemporary reporting as gaseous 3-bromocamphor. They used longitudinally polarized electrons, alternated the electrons’ helicity, and measured the production of dissociative bromide anions. For a given target enantiomer, bromide production depended on the incoming electron’s helicity.
The primary paper reports an energy-dependent asymmetry of order 3 × 10−4—a small difference, not a wholesale preference. The paper’s abstract describes the result as demonstrating the viability of the Vester–Ulbricht hypothesis in a specific reaction. Chemistry World’s contemporary account conveys the scale with a coin-flip analogy attributed to Dreiling: roughly 10,003 heads versus 9,997 tails over 20,000 flips. That analogy illustrates the small effect; it is not a separate measured statistic.
Why molecular handedness matters
A chiral molecule and its mirror image—its two enantiomers—cannot be superimposed, much like left and right hands. Biology strongly favors particular forms in important molecular families, including amino acids and sugars. That preference raises a broad question: why did nature come to favor one molecular handedness over another?

The Vester–Ulbricht hypothesis links this asymmetry to parity-violating beta decay and polarized electrons. In one formulation, polarized radiation could preferentially break down molecules of one handedness, leaving an excess of the other. Dreiling and Gay tested one reaction-level part of that proposal: whether electron helicity can affect the breakup of a chiral molecule.
What the result does—and does not—show
| Claim | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Electron helicity can affect molecular breakup | Supported for the studied sub-eV collisions involving polarized electrons and gas-phase chiral bromocamphor; bromide-anion production showed a small, energy-dependent asymmetry. Dreiling and Gay, 2014 |
| Polarized cosmic beta radiation created an excess of one molecular form relevant to life | Not tested by this experiment. The study did not recreate astrophysical or early-Earth conditions, establish that this process occurred in nature, or show that it caused biological homochirality. Chemistry World, 2014 |
Co-author Tim Gay said the experiment showed that the Vester–Ulbricht hypothesis, “in the form where it says the incident electron is responsible for the breakup reaction, can happen.” He also said, “We validated that idea.” The qualification is essential: as the same report notes, the experiment did not show that the proposed process actually occurred as the origin of biological handedness.

Why this is a clue, not an origin-of-life answer
The measured molecule was bromocamphor, and the setting was a controlled gas-phase laboratory experiment. Showing that an electron’s helicity can influence this molecule’s breakup establishes a possible physical mechanism. It does not establish that the mechanism operated on early Earth, that it produced a biologically meaningful enantiomeric excess, or that it explains the handedness found in DNA-related biology.

It does not answer why life settled on the handedness it did.
