No available poll cited here establishes that Brazilian voters broadly say President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is turning Brazil into “another Venezuela.” That is a campaign claim, not a documented nationwide voter sentiment. Brazil’s presidential first round is scheduled for October 4, 2026; a runoff is set for October 25 if no candidate wins more than half the vote. The ballot also includes congressional and state races.
What the latest poll says—and what it does not
A Datafolha poll published by Folha on October 2 puts Lula at 45% and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro at 40% of valid first-round votes. In a simulated runoff, Lula has 48% and Flávio 45%; Datafolha describes that result as a statistical tie because it falls within the poll’s stated two-percentage-point margin of error. The fieldwork took place September 29 through October 1, with 2,506 voters interviewed in 152 municipalities. Seventeen percent said they might still change their vote. Datafolha poll via Folha
The 45% and 40% figures are shares of valid first-round vote intention, not election results or percentages of the entire sample: valid-vote calculations exclude blank and null ballots and undecided voters. The runoff figures are a separate scenario, not a forecast of the result. The poll measures candidate preferences; it does not ask whether Lula is making Brazil “another Venezuela.”

Why the “another Venezuela” wording needs qualification
The exact phrase is not established as a widespread view in the available evidence. The cited polls measure election preferences, confidence in institutions, and satisfaction with democracy, but do not document voters using that comparison or show how common it is. Without an attributable interview, field report, or survey question supporting it, the wording should be treated as a campaign claim or political frame—not as a finding about Brazilian voters generally.

Nor does dissatisfaction with democracy, by itself, prove democratic breakdown or establish that Brazil is equivalent to Venezuela. A serious country comparison would need to specify what is being compared, such as electoral competition and transfers of power, institutional independence and constraints, economic conditions, or foreign-policy alignment. The available election and campaign material does not provide a balanced assessment across those dimensions.
What Brazilians say about democracy
A Pew Research Center survey offers context about public sentiment, but it is not an election poll and does not ask whether Brazil is becoming Venezuela. Pew interviewed 1,054 Brazilian adults between February 20 and April 15, 2026. In that survey, 37% said they were satisfied with how democracy was working in Brazil, while 59% were dissatisfied. Pew’s historical comparison shows dissatisfaction at 83% in 2018 and satisfaction at 66% in 2013. Those figures describe changing evaluations of democracy, not proof of a particular political trajectory. The 2026 survey also predates the final campaign stretch.
Issues shaping the campaign
Campaign coverage identifies organized crime and drug trafficking, corruption, cost of living, and national sovereignty as salient concerns. A Council on Foreign Relations overview reports that 28% named violence as Brazil’s main problem in a September Quaest survey. It also cites separate September figures: 33% said their income had not risen over the previous year, while 21% said it had risen but not kept pace with living costs. These are figures reported secondhand by CFR; they should not be mistaken for results from the Datafolha poll or presented as primary survey data without checking the original Quaest releases. Foreign policy is another point of contrast. CFR says Lula has emphasized sovereignty and closer relations with China, while Flávio Bolsonaro’s platform is more closely aligned with his father’s and favors a stronger relationship with the United States. Their positions on Cuba and Venezuela differ. Those positions help explain why Venezuela may feature in political argument, but they do not establish that voters broadly use the comparison in the headline.
Polarization, leaders, and voter motivation
Oliver Stuenkel, an associate professor of international relations at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo, described the contest to CFR as a rematch of 2022 by proxy, with voters deciding for or against Lula and the Bolsonaro family. He also said that many voters he speaks to are motivated by dislike or fear of the other side rather than specific policies. That is his observation from conversations, not a representative national survey result.

Le Millénaire’s October 1 analysis argues that cost-of-living pressure and fatigue with polarization can limit the political benefit of improving indicators. It cites 43% as the share of voters tired of or uneasy about the political climate and 71% as the share who believe polarization directly affects the election, attributing those figures to ErreJota Notícias. What to watch on election weekend
Brazil’s October 4 vote is not only a presidential contest: voters also choose legislators and governors, and voting is mandatory. If no presidential candidate receives more than half the vote, the scheduled runoff is October 25. The close Datafolha runoff simulation and the share of respondents who say they may change their vote make it important to distinguish campaign polling from the eventual count.

- Claims about democracy: Assess them against specific evidence about elections, institutions, and constraints on power, rather than treating dissatisfaction as proof.
- Claims about what voters believe: Look for a clearly attributed interview, reporting, or survey that asks about the comparison. The polling cited here does not do that.
