Businesses in Brazil can accept contactless payments directly on an iPhone using Apple’s Tap to Pay feature, without a separate payment terminal. To use it, a merchant needs an iPhone XS or later and a participating payment provider’s app. The service launched in Brazil on September 19, 2023; Apple’s current list includes Cielo, CloudWalk, Mercado Pago, Nubank, Stone, and SumUp.
What Tap to Pay on iPhone does
Tap to Pay turns a participating merchant’s iPhone into a contactless payment acceptance device. The merchant starts the sale in a supported payment app, and the customer taps a contactless debit or credit card, an Apple Pay device, or another digital wallet on the merchant’s iPhone. It is a way for businesses to take payments—not a new way for an iPhone owner to pay at a shop.
Apple says no additional payment equipment is required. That does not mean the service is free: Apple’s feature information does not specify provider fees, so merchants need to check the terms of the payment provider they choose.

What you need in Brazil
- A compatible iPhone: Apple currently specifies iPhone XS or later and recommends using the latest iOS. Check Apple’s current Brazil requirements before relying on a particular device or software version.
- A participating provider: Apple’s current country and region listing names Cielo, CloudWalk, Mercado Pago, Nubank, Stone, and SumUp for Brazil. Provider support does not imply identical eligibility, card acceptance, fees, or other terms.
- The provider’s supported payment app: Tap to Pay is enabled within a participating provider’s app, which processes the payment.
Apple’s 2023 launch announcement named CloudWalk as available at launch and Granito, Nubank, Stone, and SumUp as expected soon. That was a launch-time statement, not the current availability list; Apple’s present listing marks Granito as “Coming soon.”

How to accept a payment
- Confirm that your iPhone is an XS or later and check Apple’s current requirements for iOS.
- Choose a provider that currently supports Tap to Pay in Brazil, then confirm its merchant eligibility and terms.
- Install or open that provider’s supported payment app and enable Tap to Pay in the app.
- Enter the sale amount in the app and present the iPhone to the customer.
- Ask the customer to tap a contactless card or supported digital wallet device on the iPhone, then follow the app’s instructions to complete the transaction.
Check card support, limits, and fees with the provider
Tap to Pay does not guarantee that every contactless card or transaction will work. Apple’s Brazil FAQ advises merchants to ask their payment app provider which contactless card brands it supports. Apple’s launch announcement also cautioned that some contactless cards might not be accepted and transaction limits might apply. Check the provider’s current terms for supported networks, transaction limits, fees, settlement timing, refunds, disputes, and customer support before choosing a service.
Apple’s sources do not provide current Brazil-specific provider pricing or settlement terms, so there is no sound basis here to rank the listed providers by cost or payout speed.

What Apple says about payment security
Apple says Tap to Pay transactions are encrypted and processed using the iPhone’s Secure Element, and that Apple does not know what is being bought or who is buying. Those are Apple’s descriptions of its system, not an independent security audit. Merchants should also review the privacy, security, and dispute information supplied by their payment provider.
When the feature arrived in Brazil
Apple announced Brazilian availability on September 19, 2023. In the launch release, Apple vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet Jennifer Bailey said: “O Tap to Pay no iPhone ajudou empresas do mundo inteiro e de todos os portes — de autônomos a grandes varejistas — a oferecer novas experiências de pagamento, e estamos empolgados em trazer uma solução de pagamento fácil, segura e privada para os comerciantes brasileiros.” CloudWalk founder and CEO Luis Silva said: “Com o Tap to Pay no iPhone, os comerciantes podem começar rapidamente a aceitar pagamentos por aproximação usando somente um iPhone, oferecendo uma excelente oportunidade para que as pessoas criem empresas de todos os portes.” Both quotations are from Apple’s Brazil launch announcement.

Choosing among the supported providers
Apple’s list establishes which providers currently appear for Brazil, not which one is best for a particular business. Compare the terms that affect your operation directly: onboarding requirements, accepted card networks, transaction limits and fees, settlement timing, refund and dispute tools, app compatibility, and support. The provider—not Apple’s feature page—can confirm its current merchant conditions.
For merchants who already have an eligible iPhone, the XS is a compatibility threshold rather than a reason by itself to replace a working supported phone. Apple presents Tap to Pay as a way to accept contactless payments without additional payment hardware.
