Brazil’s TV Globo presidential debate scheduled for October 1, 2026, was cancelled after judicial rulings changed the agreed event rules and the leading candidates would not attend. Separately, police investigated a suspected bomb threat near the Supreme Federal Court in Brasília that evening; a backpack was found to contain personal belongings, not an explosive device.
Why was the Brazil election debate cancelled?
TV Globo had scheduled the presidential debate for Thursday, October 1, three days before the first-round vote set for Sunday, October 4. The broadcaster said two judicial rulings—one from the electoral court and another from the Supreme Court—created “legal uncertainty” and made the debate unworkable under the rules agreed with the candidates. Al Jazeera reported TV Globo’s explanation.
One notice, signed by Superior Electoral Court (TSE) minister Estela Aranha, barred the broadcaster from showing President and candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s empty lectern on stage, according to Agência Brasil. Lula had already told Globo he would not take part. Flávio Bolsonaro, identified in the reporting as Lula’s principal opponent, also withdrew. He called the electoral court’s decision “censorship”; that was his characterization, not an established finding about the ruling or the court’s motives.
Was there a bomb outside Brazil’s Supreme Court?
No explosive device was found. On the evening of October 1, the Federal District Military Police investigated a suspected bomb threat near the Supreme Federal Court (STF), at Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília. Police said a 28-year-old man was seen at about 19:50 Brasília time throwing a backpack onto a nearby bus stop. The court separately said he had tried to jump its fence.

Authorities isolated the area and called the bomb squad to examine the backpack. It contained personal belongings only. The man was detained, and the investigation was continuing at the time of reporting. UOL, relaying an STF statement, reported that the backpack being thrown onto the bus stop led authorities to activate Operation Petardo and follow the procedures for checking a possible explosive device: UOL/Agência Estado. The incident was an investigation of a suspected threat, not a confirmed bombing.

The reports establish that both events took place on October 1, but do not establish a connection. They involved different circumstances: the debate dispute concerned the broadcaster, court rulings and campaign participation; the backpack incident was a police security investigation near the STF. No motive for the detained man or link between the two events was established in the reporting.
