Neither Brandwatch nor Meltwater is a universal winner for brand monitoring. The better fit depends on the social and media sources you need, the countries and languages you cover, how much historical context you must analyze, and how your team uses alerts and reports. Brandwatch’s published material emphasizes social listening and consumer intelligence; Meltwater explicitly presents social monitoring alongside earned-media monitoring. Compare the exact coverage and package each vendor will provide—not headline source counts alone.
What brand monitoring includes
Brand monitoring tracks and analyzes mentions of a brand, its products, and key people across online and offline channels. Brandwatch’s glossary, updated March 14, 2026, distinguishes it from related practices: monitoring shows where and how often a brand appears; social listening explores why people are talking and what that may mean; media monitoring focuses on press coverage. In practice, platforms can span these categories, so compare the work they support rather than relying on product labels.
Brandwatch describes social listening and Consumer Intelligence, as well as separate Media Intelligence & Insights services. Meltwater describes both social listening and earned-media monitoring. The two vendors therefore overlap, but their public product descriptions do not establish identical channel coverage or package boundaries.

Brandwatch: social listening and consumer intelligence
Brandwatch says its Listen product monitors brands, products, and competitors in real time, analyzes sentiment and brand perception, and alerts teams to unusual trends and negative comments. Its listed features include unlimited search queries, 48 Boolean operators, a year of historical data, multiple languages, sentiment analysis, AI smart alerts, and mention exploration. Brandwatch says Listen can access 100 million online sources. These are vendor descriptions; they do not establish how well the platform covers a particular source or how its analysis compares independently with Meltwater’s.
#1 Best Overall
Brandwatch’s broader suite overview describes Consumer Intelligence for understanding consumers, monitoring brand health and reputation, spotting sentiment shifts, and benchmarking competitors. It also lists social publishing, engagement, measurement, influencer marketing, and Trajaan-powered search intelligence. In that overview, Brandwatch claims more than 100 million unique data sources and 1.6 trillion historical conversations dating back to 2010. Those broad suite figures are not interchangeable with Listen’s separate one-year historical-data listing, and the overview does not establish that every capability is included in one package.
Meltwater: social and earned-media monitoring
Meltwater says its social-monitoring product covers 20+ networks, more than 200 countries, and 240+ languages. Its listed capabilities include real-time alerts, sentiment analysis, trend detection, competitor tracking, share-of-voice analysis, automated dashboards and reporting, and historical data analysis. Meltwater also describes spike and sentiment-shift alerts, with delivery through Slack or other channels. Treat the geographic and language counts as vendor-stated scope, not a guarantee that every required platform, local outlet, or language is available in the package you are considering.
Rank #2
Meltwater’s media-monitoring page extends its description to online publications, print, broadcast, podcasts, and social sources. It lists real-time monitoring, AI-assisted sentiment and trend analysis, custom dashboards, comparative analysis, and reporting. Meltwater claims 400,000+ traditional media sources, 200M+ online publications, and 20,000+ podcasts. The page also describes views for share of voice, reach, sentiment, trends, top publications, locations, influencers, and journalists. Validate the specific sources relevant to your markets; these counts use categories that should not be treated as directly comparable with Brandwatch’s source totals.

Rank #3
1. Required sources and channels
List the social networks, forums, review sites, news publications, broadcast outlets, print sources, and podcasts your team actually needs. Meltwater explicitly presents social and earned-media monitoring together. Brandwatch presents social listening and Consumer Intelligence alongside separate Media Intelligence & Insights services. Neither description makes a total source count a substitute for confirming access to the individual sources that matter to you.
2. Markets and languages
Identify the exact countries, languages, platforms, and local outlets in scope. Meltwater publishes its 200+ countries and 240+ languages figures for social monitoring; Brandwatch lists multiple languages and broad source counts. Because those descriptions do not define coverage in a directly comparable way, request confirmation for your own markets and sample queries in the languages you use.
3. Historical context
Brandwatch Listen lists a year of historical data, while Brandwatch’s suite overview separately claims an archive of 1.6 trillion historical conversations dating back to 2010. Meltwater lists historical data analysis on its social-monitoring page without giving a matching duration there. Ask how far back you can query in the proposed package, for each required source, and whether the same period is available for new and existing queries.
4. Querying, analysis, and alerts
Compare the controls your analysts need to build and refine searches, how sentiment and topics are analyzed, and how teams can detect unusual activity. Brandwatch lists 48 Boolean operators and AI smart alerts. Meltwater describes spike and sentiment-shift alerts, including delivery through Slack or other channels. Feature descriptions do not establish equal detection quality or alert speed. Use the same test scenarios and ask each vendor to explain how queries, thresholds, and delivery settings work.
5. Competitive and executive reporting
Both vendors describe competitor analysis or benchmarking, share of voice, and reporting or dashboards. Ask each to demonstrate the same competitor set, date range, channels, and report task—for example, a scheduled view of brand mentions and share of voice across your specified social and media sources. Check whether the required views can be exported or shared in the format your stakeholders use.
6. Package and commercial fit
The reviewed product pages do not provide like-for-like current pricing, contract terms, or plan boundaries. Request a current proposal and compare equivalent users, markets, source coverage, data history, support, integrations, and add-ons. A price comparison is meaningful only when those requirements and package inclusions match.

The vendors’ product pages describe overlapping capabilities, but they do not establish a universal winner or a head-to-head finding that one platform is more accurate, faster, or more complete. Their source totals also use different descriptions and categories, so adding them to a single ranking would be misleading. Make the decision against your required sources, markets, historical period, analysis workflow, and reporting task; ask for a demonstration or trial that tests those same requirements.
Meltwater’s 2026 Global State of Social Media report says 87% of surveyed marketers identified monitoring brand reputation as a social-listening goal. Meltwater says the survey gathered input from over 1,500 marketing professionals across countries, including the United States, Canada, the Philippines, China, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Italy, and South Africa. This is a finding about the report’s respondents, not a universal estimate or evidence that either product performs better.
