Brand intelligence helps leaders make better decisions when it connects evidence about customer and employee perceptions, competitors, and business performance to a specific action. The goal is not to collect more metrics: it is to understand how does your brand shape up against your competitors? and decide what to maintain, change, or fund.
What brand intelligence means in business
There is no single formal definition shared by the sources cited here. In practical terms, brand intelligence is structured evidence about how a brand performs and is perceived, interpreted alongside competitors and business context so it can guide decisions.
It can draw on several kinds of evidence: customer surveys, search behavior, social media, sales data, online audience discussion, competitor messaging, and employee views. No one source or metric gives a complete picture. The value comes from combining relevant signals and interpreting them against a decision the business needs to make.
Kantar describes brand tracking as ongoing measurement of brand-building efforts, including awareness and perception, and says its brand guidance systems can combine consumer research, search, social media, and sales data. Kantar’s description of brand tracking explains how this evidence can inform campaign and investment decisions.

What decisions brand intelligence can support
Monitor brand health over time
Ongoing tracking can show whether awareness, perception, or other chosen measures are changing. Comparisons are useful only when the team defines measures consistently and chooses a cadence that fits the decision. For example, a campaign readout may need timely feedback, while a longer-term brand review may focus on trends across multiple periods.
Understand competitive position
A brand can improve on its own measures yet lose ground relative to competitors. Competitive context helps identify relative strengths and weaknesses, and can point to where a brand should protect an advantage, address a gap, or avoid investing in an area where it has little potential to differentiate.

BMi Research describes its Brand Gauge as measuring brand performance in a competitive context and identifying relative strengths, weaknesses, and possible levers for brand owners. Michelle Daines, the company’s Research Manager for Consumer Behaviour and Business Insights, said in March 2026: “Brand Gauge measures the performance of a brand in a competitive context. It provides intel on a brand’s relative strengths and weaknesses, and the levers to push or pull to accelerate or underpin growth. Together, these insights provide strategic direction for brand owners.” This is a description of the service and its intended use, not independent proof that a particular tool produces growth. Adjust campaigns and marketing investment
Brand tracking can help teams assess campaigns, media mix, and marketing investment, and identify future opportunities. Treat these as decisions the evidence can inform—not outcomes the measurement itself guarantees. A change in brand perception does not, by itself, establish that a particular campaign caused it or that additional spending will generate a specific return.
Compare customer perceptions with employee experience
External and internal views answer different questions. Customer evidence shows how the market experiences the brand; employee evidence can indicate whether people inside the organization understand and deliver the promise made externally. brandr Intelligence describes measuring both market and employee perceptions. Its stated features and benchmarks are vendor claims, so assess whether its actual coverage and methods suit your organization. brandr Intelligence product information
Interpret unstructured audience signals
Online discussion can surface themes that a fixed survey may not capture, but it should be interpreted alongside other evidence rather than treated as a representative view of all customers. PSB Insights says its Breakthrough Brand Intelligence approach analyzes online unstructured audience signals alongside consumer perceptions and brand and competitor messages. In a July 14, 2026 announcement, PSB described processing more than three million lines of unstructured data through 15 proprietary AI filters and coding it into 60 attributes. These figures describe PSB’s own method; they are not independent validation of its accuracy or a guarantee of business impact. PSB Insights’ announcement

How to evaluate brand intelligence options
Start with the business decision, then choose the evidence and method that can answer it. A platform, a managed research service, or a combination may fit, depending on the audiences and signals you need.
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Signal coverage | Does it include the surveys, search, social, sales, online discussion, competitor messaging, or employee views relevant to your decision? |
| Cadence and timeliness | Is measurement continuous, periodic, campaign-linked, or a one-off study? How quickly will results arrive when a decision is due? |
| Comparability | Are measures defined consistently across time, competitors, categories, and markets? Are suitable benchmarks available? |
| Decision connection | Can the team explain what action a finding supports, such as a positioning change, campaign adjustment, media allocation, or investment decision? |
| Method and support | Is the offering self-serve software, a managed research service, or a combination? What methodological expertise is included? |
| Limitations | Which audiences or channels are absent? Which claims are provider descriptions, and which have been independently demonstrated? |
For example, Kantar describes combining consumer research, search, social media, and sales. Qualtrics lists measures including awareness, consideration, purchase intent, loyalty, NPS, brand associations, brand equity scores, and competitive benchmarks. Those feature lists describe provider offerings; compare them with the decisions your team actually needs to make and the audiences it needs to represent. What 2026 data does—and does not—show
Recent figures can provide context about marketing and brand measurement, but they are not universal standards for brand intelligence or evidence that a particular approach works.
- Kantar BrandZ: Its 2026 report excerpt describes a database analysis covering 24,363 brands during 2022–2025. The same report states that its Most Valuable Global Brands 2026 coverage is 211 brands; that is the report’s stated scope, not the total number of brands in the database. Kantar BrandZ 2026 report
- BCG’s 2026 CMO survey: Boston Consulting Group says it surveyed 300 CMOs in B2C and B2B sectors. Of those surveyed, 96% said AI was driving end-to-end marketing transformation, while about one third had completed that work; 42% said they used generative AI only to assist humans with discrete tasks. These are respondents’ reports, not results for all companies or proof of business outcomes. BCG’s 2026 marketing transformation article
When specialist research may help
A team may need research support when it lacks the time, expertise, or data access to answer a consequential brand question. NIQ describes brand health and consumer insight services, while PSB describes an approach that combines audience signals with brand and competitor messaging. Evaluate any provider on its methods, audience coverage, transparency, and ability to connect findings to a decision; service descriptions alone do not establish comparative performance or guaranteed results. Turn evidence into a decision
- Name the decision. Specify whether the question concerns positioning, a campaign, media allocation, customer experience, or investment.
- Choose relevant evidence. Select signals that can answer that question, and identify whose views or which channels are missing.
- Set a fair comparison. Use consistent definitions and an appropriate time period, competitor set, category, or market.
- Interpret the result in context. Separate observed changes from explanations for those changes, and distinguish correlation from causation.
- Agree on an action and a follow-up measure. Record what the team will change or maintain, why, and what evidence will indicate whether the decision was useful.
The strongest brand intelligence practice is not the one with the largest dashboard. It is the one that gives decision-makers credible, comparable evidence—and makes clear what that evidence can and cannot support.
