No—downloading Box on an iPhone or iPad today does not unlock 50GB for life. That was a deadline-based Box promotion reported in January 2014. It is no longer available to new users, and it was not a Dropbox outage feature. Box’s mobile app and Dropbox’s mobile app each provide their own file access; when Dropbox has problems, check its status page and see whether files already synced to a device remain available.
What did Box’s 50GB promotion actually offer?
In January 2014, the Los Angeles Times reported that users could receive 50GB of Box storage by downloading Box’s redesigned iPhone or iPad app and logging in by February 15, 2014. Box said the storage would not expire. The same report described 10GB as Box’s normal new-user allowance at the time, making the promotion a substantial increase over that historical baseline.
The eligibility deadline has long passed. An April 2025 Box Community response from Box employee Jey Bueno described the offer as a promotion from several years earlier that was no longer available. That means a new Box account—or a fresh download of Box’s current iOS app—does not qualify for the old 50GB offer.
Can people who already received the 50GB keep it?
According to the April 2025 Box Community response, recipients could continue using the promotional storage if their account remained unchanged. The response warned that changes affecting a subscription, account type, or storage could forfeit the promotional amount. It does not specify every account change that might trigger removal, so anyone with the legacy quota should confirm the consequences with Box before changing plans or account details.

How does the old offer compare with later Box promotions?
Box has advertised other time-limited storage promotions since 2014, but those do not revive the old 50GB offer or establish a current signup entitlement.

What can Box’s current iPhone and iPad app do?
Box still lists Box Mobile for iPhone and iPad on its downloads page. Its current mobile guidance describes simplified media capture, chunked uploads, Apple Files integration, and more resilient downloads. These are app features, not a guarantee of extra storage.

Keep Box files available offline
Box’s iOS help explains how to mark files for offline access. It also says a download can resume after the network reconnects or after the app is reopened. If you need a file during a trip or unreliable connection, mark it for offline access while you are online and make sure the download has completed before relying on it.

Dropbox directs users to its status page during service interruptions. Its help guidance also notes that files already present in a local Dropbox folder may remain accessible even when syncing and access to dropbox.com are affected. Availability depends on where the file is stored: a cloud-only file that has not been downloaded is different from a synced local copy.

- Check Dropbox’s status page. Use it to see whether Dropbox reports an incident affecting its services.
- Check for a local synced copy. If you use Dropbox on a computer, look in the local Dropbox folder for the file. Files stored locally may open even while syncing or the website is affected.
- For future access, prepare files offline in advance. Dropbox says its mobile app supports offline files; Box also supports marking files for offline access in its iOS app. These are separate services and require files to be made available through the relevant app or synced location.
Box can be a separately configured place to store or access files, but the cited Box and Dropbox guidance does not describe Box as an automatic Dropbox failover. Moving or copying important files to another service ahead of an outage is different from expecting one provider to take over when the other is unavailable.

Both providers describe mobile access and offline-related features, but neither app converts the retired Box promotion into a current free-storage offer. Choose based on where your files already live and which sharing and offline workflow you need.
