Short answer: If by “Bose headphones” you mean Bose’s current flagship, the comparison is the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) versus Sony’s WH-1000XM5. Original-generation Bose Ultra comparisons tend to favor Bose for noise cancellation, but they are not direct tests of the 2nd Gen against the XM5. Choose based on your fit, sound preference, feature use and the prices available when you buy—not on an unproven Gen 2 win.

Which Bose headphones are being compared?

“Bose headphones” could mean several models. This guide uses the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as the Bose option and compares them with the Sony WH-1000XM5. Bose’s US comparison page also lists QuietComfort Headphones, so check the exact model name before comparing prices or specifications.

A crucial distinction: the RTINGS, SoundGuys, What Hi-Fi? and Tom’s Guide comparisons cited here test the original QuietComfort Ultra, not the 2nd Gen. Those reviews can help identify useful comparison criteria and offer context about the earlier model, but they do not establish which of these two specific current-generation products performs better head to head.

Noise cancellation: what can you conclude?

Comparisons of the original Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Sony WH-1000XM5 tend to favor the Bose for noise cancellation. RTINGS assesses noise isolation across scenarios; What Hi-Fi? also characterizes the original Bose Ultra’s ANC as slightly better. That evidence is useful background, not a controlled result for the 2nd Gen.

Bose says the 2nd Gen offers Quiet Mode for its “best around-ear noise cancelling” or Aware Mode to let in your surroundings. That is Bose’s description of its own product, not an independent comparison with Sony. For your decision, consider the noises you encounter most—such as steady transit or office sound—and try both pairs in person if you can. A published original-generation comparison cannot tell you how the newer Bose model will feel or perform in your own routine.

Fit, comfort and sound matter as much as the feature list

Fit and comfort

Comfort is personal, and a pair that seals well and stays comfortable for your typical listening session may suit you better than one with a small advantage in a review category. Tom’s Guide includes comfort in its comparison coverage, but the model limitation still applies: it discusses the original Bose Ultra. If possible, try each pair on and pay attention to pressure, stability and how the earcups feel after more than a brief fitting.

Sound preference

There is no universal winner for sound. SoundGuys says preference and willingness to use EQ affect which option sounds better; What Hi-Fi? describes the original Bose Ultra as richer-sounding. Neither characterization proves that the 2nd Gen will sound better to you than the XM5. Listen to familiar tracks, and consider whether you want to adjust equalizer settings rather than relying on a review’s preferred tuning.

Battery life depends on how you use the headphones

The headline figures are manufacturer claims, not results from a matched independent test. Sony specifies up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. Bose lists up to 30 hours for the 2nd Gen, but its detailed test disclosure reports up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with it on. Bose conducted that test in April 2025 under its stated conditions. The difference matters if you expect to use Immersive Audio regularly.

These figures are not directly interchangeable: the brands state different conditions, and Bose’s detailed figures distinguish an audio feature setting. If battery endurance is important, compare the brands’ test conditions and think about which features you will actually leave enabled rather than treating the largest number as a guaranteed everyday result.

Features and connectivity

Bose lists adjustable noise canceling, Quiet and Aware modes, Immersive Audio, Bluetooth 5.4 and multipoint connectivity for the 2nd Gen. Sony’s specifications list Bluetooth 5.2 and support for SBC, AAC and LDAC audio codecs. Sony includes a carrying case, connection cable and USB cable. These are documented product details, not a complete equivalence test: decide which modes, codec support or included accessories matter for your devices and habits.

If calls are a major reason for buying, evaluate microphone performance specifically. The comparison coverage includes microphones, but its Bose model is the original Ultra; it does not settle call quality between Gen 2 and XM5.

Price and value at the time you buy

On October 7, 2026, Bose’s US product page listed the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) at $449. Sony’s US page displayed the WH-1000XM5 at $299.99, reduced from a displayed reference price of $399.99. These are page observations from that date, not a long-term price comparison; listings and availability can change.

  • WIRELESS HEADPHONES BLUETOOTH: Advanced Bluetooth 5.3 offers connection within 30 feet of your device; SimpleSync allows you to sync with a Bose smart soundbar so you can listen to TV at your own volume

At those observed prices, Sony was the lower-priced option. That may make it the stronger value for a shopper whose priorities are met by its feature set, while the Bose may be worth considering if you specifically want its modes and current flagship positioning. Price alone does not establish which pair is better for you, and the cited evidence does not establish a Gen 2 cancellation advantage over Sony.

How to choose between them

  • Choose the Sony WH-1000XM5 if the price currently available is the deciding factor, its fit works for you, and its listed features meet your needs. The observed lower price is specific to the US pages checked on October 7, 2026.
  • Consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want Bose’s current flagship and value its Quiet/Aware modes, adjustable cancellation, Immersive Audio or multipoint connectivity. Treat those as product features, not proof that it beats the XM5 in noise cancellation.
  • Try both before deciding if fit, comfort, sound character or call use will affect your everyday satisfaction. Reviews of the original Bose Ultra can inform what to investigate, but do not substitute for a Gen 2 versus XM5 test.

For another point of reference, Bose’s US comparison page listed standard QuietComfort Headphones at $359 and QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) at $449. The lower-priced Bose model is a separate product, so do not assume a comparison against it answers the question about the Ultra 2nd Gen.
