Don’t skip the Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) solely because of a reported $169 Prime Day price on Gen 1: that price has not been confirmed as a live Amazon offer. If you can verify it in your market, Gen 1 may be the better-value pick if you mainly want noise cancellation and ordinary listening. The 2nd Gen is the feature upgrade, adding spatial audio modes, lossless USB-C playback, and Bose-described improvements to calls and noise handling.
First, check whether the $169 Prime Day price is real
A Reddit search result dated October 6, 2026 included one user’s report of seeing Bose QuietComfort headphones for $169 plus tax during Prime Day. That report does not verify an Amazon listing, seller, stock, or whether the offer is still available on October 7. Treat $169 as an unconfirmed user-reported price, not a current deal. Check the live listing, exact model name, seller, and checkout total before comparing.
Prices also depend on market and date. Bose’s UK comparison page showed £229.95 for the original and £299.95 for 2nd Gen when accessed; those are UK prices, not US prices. TechRadar reported on August 8, 2026 that Gen 1 was $229 at Amazon and gave $359 as the new model’s launch price, but those are dated figures rather than live prices. Bose Australia announced a $549.95 Australian preorder price on August 7, 2026, with general availability from August 13. None of these figures establishes what either model costs in your market today.

What changes between Gen 1 and 2nd Gen?
The newer product’s official name is Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen). These are the standard QuietComfort over-ear headphones, not Bose QuietComfort Ultra models. Bose describes Gen 1 as offering noise cancellation, Quiet, Aware, and Custom listening modes, plus analogue wired listening with an in-line microphone. Its comparison says Gen 1 does not have TrueSpatial audio or Cinema Mode.

- ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
| Feature | QuietComfort Headphones (Gen 1) | QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) |
|---|---|---|
| Noise cancellation and listening modes | Noise cancellation; Quiet, Aware, and Custom modes, according to Bose. | Quiet and Aware modes, with Bose-described ActiveSense updates in Aware Mode. |
| Spatial and cinema listening | TrueSpatial audio and Cinema Mode are not included, according to Bose’s comparison. | TrueSpatial spatial audio, Cinema, and Immersion modes, according to Bose. |
| Wired audio | Analogue wired audio with an in-line microphone, according to Bose. | Lossless wired USB-C playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz, according to Bose’s 2026 announcement and product specifications. Bose also lists a USB-C-to-3.5-mm cable in the box. |
| Calls and design | Adaptive microphones for calls, according to Bose. | Bose describes improved background-noise reduction for calls and a redesigned headband and earcups. |
| Battery, Bluetooth, and microphone count | Not stated in the cited Bose comparison. | Bose lists up to 24 hours of battery life, or 18 hours with Immersive Audio; Bluetooth 5.4; and six microphones. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. |
Bose’s August 7, 2026 announcement describes the 2nd Gen’s TrueSpatial modes as Still, Motion, and Cinema. It also says the six-microphone system and adaptive noise cancellation have been refined to address imperfect earcup seals and sudden noise. These are Bose’s feature descriptions; the cited material does not independently establish how much better the headphones sound or cancel noise in real-world use.
When Gen 1 is the sensible buy
Choose Gen 1 if its verified price is meaningfully lower and your priorities are the features Bose already lists for it: noise cancellation, Quiet/Aware/Custom modes, and analogue wired listening. You may not benefit from the 2nd Gen’s additions if you do not want spatial or Cinema-style listening, do not plan to use wired USB-C lossless playback, and do not need the updated call and Aware Mode features Bose describes.

The key is the actual, same-market price gap. Compare the models at checkout rather than treating the reported $169 as established. A lower price is only a sound reason to choose the older generation if the listing is for the intended model and the seller and terms suit you.
When paying more for 2nd Gen makes sense
Consider 2nd Gen if you specifically want Bose’s TrueSpatial modes, Cinema or Immersion listening, or lossless playback over USB-C. Bose says wired USB-C playback supports up to 24-bit/48 kHz. The included box contents on Bose’s Canada product page include a carry case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, and USB-C-to-3.5-mm cable, so the listed 3.5-mm cable is not an extra purchase required for that model.

The update may also matter if call background-noise reduction, the revised ActiveSense behavior in Aware Mode, or the redesigned headband and earcups are important to you. The available product information does not establish that the redesign will fit every listener better, or quantify the improvements in calls or noise cancellation; those claims should be weighed as manufacturer descriptions rather than independent performance findings.
A practical decision rule
- Confirm the generation. Make sure the listing says QuietComfort Headphones (Gen 1) or QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), not QuietComfort Ultra.
- Verify the live price. Check the seller, availability, tax, and final checkout total in your own market. The $169 Prime Day figure is only a user report dated October 6, 2026, not a verified live listing.
- Decide whether you will use the new features. If spatial modes, Cinema/Immersion, and USB-C lossless playback are not meaningful to you, Gen 1’s Bose-listed feature set may be enough. If they are, compare the actual premium for 2nd Gen.
- Value call and fit updates realistically. Bose says the newer model improves call-noise handling and changes the fit design, but the cited sources provide no independent measurements or comparative listening results.
Bottom line
Gen 1 can be the better value at a genuinely lower, verified price for listeners who want the established basics. The 2nd Gen makes more sense for its added spatial and Cinema modes, wired lossless USB-C audio, and manufacturer-described call and Aware Mode updates. The specific $169 Prime Day claim is not enough on its own to recommend buying the older model: verify the offer and compare it with the current 2nd Gen price where you shop.
