Researchers at Brown University have reported spectroscopic evidence for an 80-atom boron anion, B80−, with a cage-like structure resembling a boron counterpart to buckminsterfullerene. The result is not yet proof that neutral B80 forms the most stable, C60-like buckyball: that structural claim still awaited confirmation by density functional theory (DFT) when Chemistry World reported the finding on 3 June 2026.

What was observed—and what remains unconfirmed

The reported species is B80−: a negatively charged cluster of 80 boron atoms. The team, led by Brown University chemist Lai-Sheng Wang, used photoelectron spectroscopy to obtain evidence for a cage-like structure. This is a significant step toward a boron fullerene analogue, but it is important not to treat the anion as an isolated neutral B80 molecule or as a fully settled structural match for C60.

The key open question is whether neutral B80 has the proposed buckyball as its most stable form. At the time of the report, the team had not confirmed that with DFT calculations. The researchers believed available DFT methods underestimated the cage’s stability; an improved calculation could enable a more direct comparison with C60.

How the boron cluster was detected

The researchers made boron clusters by laser vaporisation, using helium as a carrier gas. Initially, the clusters were too hot for the desired spectrum to be resolved. The team improved cooling by adding argon to helium; the report says B80− was observed when the helium was seeded with 20% argon.

With the better-cooled clusters, the photoelectron spectrum became resolvable. Chemistry World describes it as surprisingly simple and consistent with a highly symmetric complex with a considerable energy gap. The spectrum is the reported experimental evidence for the anion’s structure; it does not by itself resolve the outstanding question about the most stable neutral B80 cage.

How the proposed cage differs from earlier boron structures

The reported B80− cage is described as a symmetric arrangement of triangles interspersed with several pentagons. That differs from a 2007 computational proposal for B80, which placed a boron atom at the centre of each hexagon.

The report also recalls earlier work by the team on B40. Its reported structure has hexagonal holes at the top and bottom and heptagonal holes around the sides. These are distinct structures: the B40 finding supplies context for boron cages, but it is not the same geometry as the proposed B80 buckyball.

How the result compares with buckminsterfullerene

Feature Boron result Buckminsterfullerene
Species discussed Observed spectroscopic evidence concerns the anion B80−; the stability of a neutral B80 buckyball remained to be confirmed. C60, the familiar carbon fullerene.
Reported cage description Symmetric arrangement of triangles interspersed with several pentagons. Described in the report as a football-shaped carbon cage.
Evidence and confirmation Photoelectron spectroscopy provided evidence for B80−; DFT confirmation of the most stable neutral B80 structure was outstanding in the 2026 report. The report uses C60 as the established comparison; it does not give a corresponding experimental-method account here.

The comparison is therefore promising but not one-to-one: the boron result concerns a negatively charged cluster and leaves a theoretical stability question open.

Why the work took so long

Chemistry World says the investigation lasted 20 years. Wang called it “quite a long battle” and said it was “probably the most important result in my whole career,” while also describing it as the most difficult paper for him to publish. Those remarks convey his view of the effort and its significance, not an independent ranking of the discovery.

The report quotes theoretical chemist Arnout Ceulemans of the University of Leuven saying, “I have a lot of confidence [in the study] and I am very pleased that it is finally coming out.”
