If you want a retro-style shooter in the vein of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, start by checking out DUSK, Prodeus, AMID EVIL, ULTRAKILL and CULTIC. They are candidates to compare, not a verified ranking: their current Steam Deck compatibility ratings have not been established here. Check each game’s live Steam listing before buying, and treat Valve’s Verified and Playable labels as different levels of setup.
What “Steam Deck-compatible” means
Steam Deck compatibility is more than whether a game launches. Valve’s categories consider input, display, seamlessness and system support. Valve’s compatibility program uses these labels:
- Verified: works great on Deck out of the box.
- Playable: works, but may require user tweaking.
- Unsupported: currently not functional on Deck.
- Unknown: not yet checked.
Valve says reviews are ongoing, so a game’s category can change. Check its current Steam store or library compatibility details rather than relying on an old list or assuming that a Steam release is Deck-ready.
How these shooters compare with Boltgun
Boltgun is the reference point: Steam lists it as a 2023 game developed by Auroch Digital and published by Focus Entertainment. Its official description pairs Warhammer 40,000 with frenetic first-person shooting and 1990s-inspired retro visuals; Steam’s user-defined tags include “Boomer Shooter,” “FPS,” “Retro,” “Pixel Graphics” and “First-Person.” See the Steam listing for Boltgun.

Which one should you try first?
There is not enough established information here to name a single best match or claim that one of these games runs well on Deck. Use the shortlist as a starting point: if Boltgun’s retro presentation and fast first-person action are what appeal to you, compare each candidate’s gameplay description and footage, then confirm its current compatibility label. If the label is Playable, look at the Steam listing’s specific notes so you know what adjustments may be needed.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is the announced sequel, not a basis for assuming current Steam Deck compatibility. Its official announcement names October 14, 2026 as its launch date on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and describes two playable characters: Ultramarine Malum Caedo and Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath. Check the official Steam community announcement for the latest release details. A planned Steam version does not by itself establish a Deck rating.
