The U.S. Navy selected Boeing on September 29, 2026, for its F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter program. Boeing also won the U.S. Air Force’s separate F-47 development contract in March 2025—but those two awards do not establish that Boeing will make sixth-generation fighters for every U.S. service branch.
What did the Navy award Boeing?
Boeing announced that the Navy awarded it a multibillion-dollar contract to produce F/A-XX, a developmental aircraft program the company describes as the Navy’s first sixth-generation fighter. The announcement does not mean aircraft are already in service or that production deliveries have begun. Boeing says technical and program details remain classified under U.S. national security and export laws. Boeing’s September 29, 2026 announcement
Axios reported that the full-scale-development contract is worth more than $20 billion and includes multiple aircraft for ground and weapons-integration testing. It also reported that Boeing bested Northrop Grumman. That figure is a reported contract value, not a disclosed production-unit cost; Boeing’s announcement describes the award only as “multi-billion-dollar.” Axios report on the award

No. The public awards described here cover the Navy and Air Force, not every service branch. The Navy selected Boeing for F/A-XX in September 2026. Separately, the Department of the Air Force awarded Boeing the Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract for the Next Generation Air Dominance platform, designated F-47, in March 2025. That supports saying Boeing has won awards for two sixth-generation fighter programs serving two U.S. services. It does not support the broader headline claim that Boeing will make all such fighters across all branches. The F/A-XX and F-47 are separate programs; the cited announcements do not establish that they share a design.
What is F/A-XX intended to do?
The Navy describes F/A-XX as a successor to its F/A-18 Super Hornets. Axios, citing the Pentagon, reported that the aircraft is planned to augment and replace F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers beginning in the 2030s. It is expected to operate alongside the carrier variant of the F-35 and Collaborative Combat Aircraft. These are reported program intentions, not evidence that F/A-XX is operational. - Testing: Axios reported the award includes multiple aircraft for ground and weapons-integration testing, but no exact quantity. Axios
- Not publicly established: Boeing says technical and programmatic details remain classified. Axios reported that Boeing had not disclosed aircraft quantity, delivery timing, range, or payload. Those details should not be treated as known specifications or a fielding schedule. Boeing Axios
An earlier FY2026 budget briefing cited $3.5 billion in funding for F-47 and minimal development funding for F/A-XX at that time. That briefing predates the Navy’s September 2026 award, so it should not be read as a description of F/A-XX’s funding posture after the selection. U.S. Department of Defense FY2026 budget briefing
