Bluesky has applied to create the .bsky internet suffix, which could let a handle such as @sarahp.bsky.social become sarahp.bsky. That shorter identity is only a possibility: as of TechCrunch’s October 6, 2026 report, the application had not been approved, and Bluesky had not settled how names would be distributed.
What Bluesky is proposing
Bluesky applied to make “.bsky” an internet domain suffix, broadly comparable to .com or .org. If approved, the suffix could allow shorter Bluesky identities. TechCrunch’s example is changing @sarahp.bsky.social to sarahp.bsky; it is an illustration, not a confirmed future handle or available feature. The report also describes the possibility of more expansive personal profile pages, but that is not a confirmed product or launch plan. TechCrunch reported the proposal on October 6, 2026.
Approval and timing are still uncertain
In the October 6 report, the application was pending. Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider said ICANN would publish applications on October 7, 2026, including Bluesky’s request. TechCrunch reported an estimated application process of 18–24 months. That is a reported duration, not an approval date, guaranteed launch window, or evidence that the application will succeed.

TechCrunch reported that Bluesky had no plans to sell or monetize them. That describes the company’s position at the time of the report, not a permanent policy or settled distribution model. Pricing, eligibility, allocation, and transfer rules were not established.
#1 Best Overall
- THEIR LETTER LEADS THE STORY — this is not a name printed on a stock book: the letter that begins your child's name opens the book with its own dedicated page, and their name is woven through the pages that follow
- MADE TO ORDER, ONE AT A TIME — every copy is printed in the USA when you order it, so no two books are alike; choose hardcover for the keepsake shelf or softcover for little hands
- A BABY GIFT THEY WILL KEEP — the answer for baby showers, first birthdays, christenings, and grandparents who want to give something no one else will; arrives ready to gift
- HAND-PAINTED WATERCOLOR FRIENDS — a gentle giraffe, elephant, and monkey guide little ones from A to Z across 32 pages of soft watercolor art in a sturdy 8 x 8 inch square format
- PERSONALIZE IN SECONDS — tell us the name (up to 14 letters), pick boy, girl, or neutral wording, and add an optional dedication message that prints inside the front cover.
How this differs from a custom-domain handle today
Bluesky already supports using a domain a person controls as their handle. This is separate from the proposed .bsky suffix: with a custom-domain handle, the user supplies and manages an existing domain rather than receiving a name under .bsky.
An official WordPress ActivityPub project post describes using a WordPress domain as a Bluesky handle by verifying domain control with a file at /.well-known/atproto-did. That workflow is presented in the context of the project’s ATmosphere software; it should not be taken as a universal setup guide or an endorsement by Bluesky.

What “owning your identity” does—and does not—mean
Bluesky COO Rose Wang framed the proposal around identity control, telling TechCrunch: “Bluesky was built on the belief that you should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away.” She also said, “Domains are a big part of the open web, as they allow users to control their own online identity.” Those statements describe the company’s rationale; they do not establish that a domain-based handle guarantees portability of an account, audience, or content.

The domain can be lost or transferred, and incorrect DNS settings can disrupt services that depend on it. These are general considerations for managing domains, not confirmed rules for the proposed .bsky names. The available reporting does not establish whether a .bsky name would be transferable or what control users would have over one.
