Bluesky’s optional Find Friends feature can help you find people you know by matching your phone contacts with other Bluesky users who also opt in. Both people must verify a phone number, upload contacts, and have each other’s number saved. Bluesky announced the feature on December 16, 2025; its initial rollout was for mobile users in 13 named countries.
What Find Friends does
Find Friends uses your phone contacts to look for people you know on Bluesky. It is not a general phone-number search: a match requires both people to take part and each to have the other’s number in their contacts. A match may appear as soon as the other person opts in, or later if they join the feature after you.
The feature is optional. Bluesky says, “If you never use this feature, you’ll never be findable through it.” That statement refers to discoverability through Find Friends; the feature does not establish that you cannot be found through other means on Bluesky. Bluesky’s December 16, 2025 announcement describes the matching conditions.
How to find friends on Bluesky
-
Open the Bluesky mobile app and go to Settings → Find friends from contacts. Bluesky’s official account gave this route on December 17, 2025, when it said mobile app version 1.112 was live. Labels may change. See the official post.

What happens to your phone number and contacts?
Bluesky’s Find Friends privacy supplement, last updated December 14, 2025, says the company collects your phone number for verification and imported contacts’ phone numbers for matching. Bluesky describes hashing contact numbers using a proprietary one-way process that combines numbers and a separate, securely stored number known only to Bluesky. The launch announcement also describes a separately stored hardware security key.

According to Bluesky, contact numbers are hashed when imported, and the service compares hashes to identify possible matches. It says it cannot easily inspect which phone numbers are in its dataset. After a match, Bluesky says it deletes the matching hash and keeps a separate record of matched account identifiers (DIDs) without phone-number data. Unmatched hashes may be kept while you maintain your account and continue using Find Friends, so a later opt-in by a contact can create a match.
These are protections as described by Bluesky, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that using the feature carries no privacy risk. The policy also says service providers may receive personal data to provide services and describes other circumstances in which stored information may be disclosed.

Can Bluesky text your contacts?
No. Bluesky says it does not store invitation recipients’ phone numbers or send invitation messages itself. If you choose to invite someone, the app gives you a draft that you can personalize and send yourself outside Bluesky. Because you send that message directly, Bluesky says there is no in-app opt-out for those personal invitations; simply do not send the draft if you do not want to invite someone.

How to stop using Find Friends
The feature privacy supplement says users can opt out and request deletion of Find Friends data. Use the feature’s controls in the app or follow the instructions in Bluesky’s privacy supplement to manage your participation and deletion request. Bluesky says matching records are retained until you follow the matched account, opt out, or delete your account.
