Neither Bluehost nor WordPress.com is the better choice for every WordPress site. Bluehost’s listed plans emphasize multiple websites, staging and hands-on tools, while WordPress.com bundles hosting with a managed platform. Choose by comparing the plan you would actually buy: its total initial charge and renewal, site and storage limits, backup restoration, support channels, and the amount of administration you want to handle.

Prices and plan details below reflect the providers’ pages checked October 7, 2026, and can change. Confirm the checkout term, total charge, taxes, renewal price and included features before paying.

What is the difference between Bluehost and WordPress.com?

Bluehost sells WordPress hosting plans with features such as managed updates, staging and SSH/WP-CLI listed on its plan page. WordPress.com is a hosted service that bundles hosting with platform management. WordPress.com Support describes its plans as all-inclusive managed hosting: “WordPress.com plans are all-inclusive managed hosting, so you do not need to host your site elsewhere.” The guide was last reviewed August 11, 2026. WordPress.com’s host-selection guide also explains that WordPress is free software that can be installed with many hosting providers; WordPress.com is one provider, not the name of the software itself.

That difference is about the service model, not proof that one host is faster or more reliable. The provider pages considered here do not establish an independent, comparable performance test between them.

How do the plans, prices and limits compare?

The following figures are published plan details, not a like-for-like guarantee of equivalent features. Bluehost prices are tied to a 36-month initial term. WordPress.com displays monthly equivalents that vary by payment period, with renewal billing terms on its plans page.

Plan detail Bluehost WordPress hosting WordPress.com
Entry-plan price shown Starter: $3.99/month for 36 months; renews at $9.99/month Personal: monthly equivalent varies by payment period; the plans page shows renewal billing terms
Another listed tier Business: $6.99/month for 36 months; renews at $13.99/month Plans page presents Personal and higher plans with payment-period choices
Website capacity Starter: 10 websites; Business: 50 websites Plan-specific; compare the selected plan’s limits
Storage Starter: 10 GB NVMe; Business: 50 GB NVMe Personal: 6 GB

Bluehost figures are from its WordPress hosting pricing page; WordPress.com figures are from its plans page. Both pages were checked October 7, 2026. A monthly equivalent alone does not tell you the amount due now: compare the billing period, upfront total, renewal, taxes, domain terms and any paid add-ons.

Which features matter for your site?

Backups and restoration

Bluehost lists weekly website backups on the tiers shown. WordPress.com Support says backup restoration is available on Business and Commerce plans. These are different descriptions: check backup frequency, retention and restore process for the exact plan you are considering rather than assuming that a listed backup includes the restoration options you need.

Staging and site administration

Bluehost lists staging and a migration tool on Starter, as well as managed WordPress updates and SSH/WP-CLI. Business also lists staging. Those features may suit site owners who want tools for testing changes or more direct administration. WordPress.com describes managed hosting as handling technical aspects such as backups, security and caching; its plans page says plugin access, including direct plugin uploads, is available on applicable paid plans. Verify plugin eligibility and staging needs on the specific plan before choosing.

Support channels

Bluehost lists 24/7 chat support. Its Starter plan does not include phone support, while Business and higher tiers shown do. WordPress.com describes access to its Happiness team; check the current support details for the plan you select. Match the listed channel to how you prefer to get help instead of treating support as identical across tiers.

Domains and commerce

Bluehost Starter lists a free domain for the first year. WordPress.com lists a free domain for one year on paid plans. Bluehost’s eCommerce Essentials plan lists secure payment processing and WooCommerce auto-install. For a store, compare the exact payment and commerce features, transaction terms, plugin needs and support on each plan; provider plan labels alone do not establish equivalence.

Which host should you choose?

Consider Bluehost if you need several sites or listed hands-on tools

  • You expect to host multiple websites and the listed capacity fits your needs.
  • Staging, SSH/WP-CLI, migration tooling or the listed WordPress hosting features matter to your workflow.
  • You are willing to weigh the first-term charge against the published renewal rate and plan for that renewal.

Consider WordPress.com if you want hosting bundled with platform management

  • You would rather have hosting and technical operations included as part of a managed service.
  • The selected plan’s storage, plugin access and support fit your site.
  • You have confirmed that the plan includes the backup restoration capability you require.

For either provider, compare the plan you will actually use—not just the entry-level monthly figure. The useful choice depends on your site count, storage needs, control preferences, backup requirements, support channel and total cost over the billing term.
