On an iPhone, a blue bubble means the message was sent with iMessage. A green bubble means it was sent using RCS, SMS, or MMS. Green does not automatically mean something went wrong, and the color alone cannot tell you which green-message service was used.

What do blue and green message bubbles mean?

  • Blue: The message was sent with iMessage, Apple’s messaging service, over Wi-Fi or cellular data to another device using iMessage.
  • Green: The message was sent using RCS, SMS, or MMS, which are carrier-provided messaging services. All three appear green, so the bubble color does not identify which one carried the message.

Apple’s explanations of the three routes are in its iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS comparison.

What is the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS?

Route Bubble How it sends messages Features and encryption Requirements
iMessage Blue Apple service over Wi-Fi or cellular data Supports high-resolution photos and videos, documents, delivery and read receipts, typing indicators, and other Messages features. End-to-end encrypted. The sender and recipient must be using iMessage. Cellular data charges may apply when using a cellular connection.
RCS Green Carrier-provided messaging Supports richer media, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. On iPhone, Apple says end-to-end encrypted RCS (Beta) is rolling out from iOS 26.5 with supported providers; encryption depends on every participant’s provider support. Requires iOS 18 or later on iPhone and a provider that supports RCS. Availability varies by provider and region.
SMS/MMS Green Carrier-provided text and multimedia messaging Can send texts and media, but is not end-to-end encrypted. Requires a messaging plan that supports the service. SMS needs cellular service, except where Wi-Fi Calling supports SMS.

Apple says SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted. That does not mean every green message is unencrypted: a green bubble could be RCS, and Apple documents a provider-dependent encrypted RCS beta. Conversely, a green bubble is not proof that the message used RCS; SMS and MMS appear green too.

Why are my iPhone messages green?

A green conversation can be expected. Common reasons include:

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • The recipient is not using an Apple device or is not using iMessage.
  • iMessage is turned off on your iPhone or the recipient’s device.
  • iMessage is temporarily unavailable.
  • Messages needs updated settings after a device setup.
  • The conversation is using RCS, SMS, or MMS rather than iMessage.

In a group conversation, the route depends on the participants and their settings, connections, and carrier support. If someone in the group is not using iMessage, the conversation may use MMS or SMS; RCS is also available on supported configurations. Apple describes this in its guide to sending a group text.

A green bubble by itself does not establish that you were blocked, that the other person has an Android phone, or that delivery failed. It only indicates that the message was sent by a route other than iMessage.

What to check if a message is unexpectedly green

  1. Check iMessage. On your iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages and confirm iMessage is on.
  2. Check the address in use. Open Send & Receive and make sure the phone number or email address you intend to use is selected.
  3. Check setup and cellular lines. If you recently set up a new iPhone, update iOS if needed and confirm the intended cellular line is turned on, especially if you use multiple SIMs. You can also turn iMessage off and back on, then review Send & Receive again.
  4. Check connectivity and carrier support. Confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data is available for iMessage, RCS, or MMS. SMS requires cellular service unless Wi-Fi Calling supports it. Ask your carrier whether the relevant SMS, MMS, or RCS feature is supported on your plan and in your region.
  5. Review fallback behavior. The Send as Text Message option can try SMS automatically when iMessage is unavailable. It does not send an iMessage or make a green bubble blue.

Why green bubbles can behave differently

Because green covers three different routes, a bubble’s color does not tell you the exact feature set, encryption status, or connection used. RCS can offer richer messaging features than SMS/MMS, but iPhone support depends on iOS version, carrier/provider support, and region. Apple’s iOS 26 setup guide explains its RCS availability conditions.

Settings labels can vary with iOS release and region, so use the labels shown on your device if they differ. RCS availability—and the encrypted RCS beta in particular—also depends on provider support and, for encryption, support from every participant’s provider.
