Bloglines was a browser-based service for reading RSS and Atom updates from blogs and other syndicated sources. It is discontinued: an announced shutdown in 2010 did not happen as a simple, uninterrupted closure then, but later accounts report that the service became unavailable in early 2015.

What was Bloglines?

Bloglines brought subscriptions to RSS and Atom feeds together in one browser-based personal news reader. Instead of visiting each site separately, readers could check feed updates from a single place.

Its place in the early feed-reading era was recognized by Google Reader software engineer Mihai Parparita, who wrote on September 13, 2010: “Bloglines was a pioneer in the feed reading space, and for Web 2.0 in general.” The remark was made in the context of Google Reader adding instructions for people moving from Bloglines.

What happened to Bloglines?

  1. September 2010: Ask.com announced plans to shut Bloglines down in October. The announcement prompted contemporary coverage to discuss alternatives, but it should not be mistaken for proof that the service closed permanently on that date.
  2. November 2010: MerchantCircle took control of Bloglines, changing the course of the announced shutdown plan.
  3. Early 2015: Later historical accounts report that Bloglines became unavailable. It is no longer a working service.

A historical acquisition announcement said Bloglines had indexed more than 280 million live web content elements in 2005. That was an acquisition-era content-index figure, not a count of users or a current measure of the service.

How to choose a replacement and move your feeds

If you are replacing an old feed reader, start by checking whether you have an OPML export of your subscriptions. OPML is a common format for moving feed lists between readers. If you still have an exported file, look for an import option in the new service before adding subscriptions one by one.

  • Check import support: NewsBlur says it accepts OPML uploads; Inoreader documents importing subscriptions from another reader. See the NewsBlur FAQ and Inoreader’s import instructions.
  • Check your devices: Confirm that the reader works in the browsers and on the phones or tablets you actually use.
  • Compare reading and organization tools: Look for the ways you prefer to browse, search, save, and organize feed items.
  • Review current limits and pricing: Features and plan terms can change. Check each service’s current details before moving a large collection of subscriptions.

These import features make NewsBlur and Inoreader options to investigate, not automatic recommendations. Do not assume that either service can recover subscriptions from a Bloglines account that you can no longer access; an export file or another copy of your feed list may be needed.

Are old Bloglines recommendations still useful?

Some 2010 coverage recommended services such as Netvibes, FastLadder, and FeedShow. Those names belong to the period’s discussion of alternatives; that historical mention alone does not establish that they are suitable, available choices today. A Guardian column from October 28, 2010 asked for web-based RSS reader recommendations because Bloglines was then expected to close at the end of that month. It reflects the announcement and uncertainty at that time, not a current closure notice.
