Jack Dorsey’s Block cut 931 employees in March 2025, about 8% of its workforce, according to TechCrunch’s reporting at the time. That is separate from Block’s February 2026 announcement that more than 4,000 people were being asked to leave or enter consultation as the company planned to shrink from over 10,000 employees to just under 6,000. Block is a financial technology and payments company with Bitcoin-related operations—not simply a crypto business.
Is Block cutting 900 jobs or more than 4,000?
Both figures refer to different workforce reductions. The “more than 900” headline figure is the March 2025 round, reported by TechCrunch as 931 people. The larger figure belongs to a separate announcement in February 2026, when Block said more than 4,000 people were being asked to leave or enter consultation. That wording describes the announced process, not a confirmed final count of completed separations.
| Announcement | Reported scale | Stated rationale | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 25, 2025 | 931 people, about 8% of staff, according to TechCrunch | Strategy, performance, and a hierarchy change, as described in the employee email reported by TechCrunch | TechCrunch reported role-category counts; 193 managers moved to individual-contributor roles were not additional layoffs. |
| February 26–27, 2026 | More than 4,000 people asked to leave or enter consultation; headcount planned to fall from over 10,000 to just under 6,000, according to Block’s SEC-filed shareholder letter | A smaller operating model built around intelligence tools, according to CEO Jack Dorsey | The Associated Press reported that it was unclear which employees and locations would be affected. |
What happened in the March 2025 layoffs?
On March 25, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Block eliminated 931 positions, roughly 8% of its staff, citing a leaked message from the company. The report attributed the following breakdown to Dorsey’s employee email:
- 391 people were cut for strategy reasons.
- 460 were cut for performance reasons.
- 80 managers were included in a hierarchy change.
TechCrunch also reported that 193 managers were moved into individual-contributor roles. Those transfers were not layoffs and should not be added to the 931 figure. The report said Dorsey’s email denied that the cuts were for financial reasons or intended to replace workers with AI. These details come from TechCrunch’s account of the email, not from a separate company filing confirming each category.

What did Block announce in February 2026?
In a shareholder letter filed with the SEC on February 26, 2026, Block said it was reducing its workforce from over 10,000 to just under 6,000. Dorsey wrote: “We’re reducing Block by nearly half, from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000, which means that over 4,000 people are being asked to leave or entering into consultation.”
The distinction matters: the letter describes people asked to leave or entering consultation, not a final tally of completed departures. The Associated Press reported the announcement the following day and said it was unclear which employees or locations would be affected. The available reporting does not establish a final separation count or geographic breakdown.

Why did Block say it was cutting jobs?
For the 2026 change, Dorsey described an operating-model shift involving smaller teams and intelligence tools. The shareholder letter states: “The core thesis is simple. Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company.” The Associated Press quoted him saying, “A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better.”

The reasons reported for the March 2025 round were different: strategy, performance, and hierarchy. TechCrunch said Dorsey’s email denied an AI-replacement rationale for that earlier round.

Is Block a crypto business?
Calling Block a crypto business alone leaves out much of what the company does. It operates financial technology and payments businesses including Square and Cash App, alongside Bitcoin-related activity. The SEC-filed letter and the Associated Press describe the company in the context of its broader business rather than as a cryptocurrency-only firm. The Block provides additional context on Block’s Bitcoin activity and workforce-reduction timeline.

Block reported fiscal 2025 gross profit of $10.36 billion and fourth-quarter 2025 gross profit of $2.87 billion in its shareholder letter. The company said those figures represented year-over-year growth of 17% for the fiscal year and 24% for the fourth quarter. They are company-reported results, but they do not establish why Block made either workforce decision.
