Blockchain.com has reportedly applied to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for two separate statuses: designation as a designated contract market (DCM) and registration as a futures commission merchant (FCM). The company is seeking a path to offer event contracts and cryptocurrency derivatives to U.S. retail and institutional customers, but the report describes applications—not CFTC approval or a launched U.S. service.

What did Blockchain.com apply for?

Quartz reported on October 9, 2026, citing CNBC and Blockchain.com, that the company filed applications for DCM status and FCM registration. Quartz described a DCM as recognition to operate a futures exchange and an FCM as registration covering brokerage services in derivatives. Those are broad explanations; the reviewed reporting does not establish the filings’ detailed structure, proposed products, or conditions. Read Quartz’s report.

  • DCM: the exchange-function designation Blockchain.com reportedly seeks.
  • FCM: the derivatives-brokerage registration it reportedly seeks.

The applications are distinct from a decision granting either status. No primary application docket or verified decision timeline was available in the cited reporting.

Has the CFTC approved Blockchain.com’s prediction market?

The October 9 report does not say that the CFTC approved Blockchain.com, authorized a U.S. prediction market, or permitted the company to launch U.S. derivatives services. “Applied for” is the accurate description. The proposal’s reported aim is to serve U.S. retail and institutional customers, but the applications’ terms have not been established in the available reporting.

Can U.S. customers already use these products?

Quartz reported that Blockchain.com had rolled out prediction markets through a Polymarket partnership and perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid for certain customers outside the United States. That report does not establish U.S. availability, nor does it show that those overseas products are the offerings described in the CFTC applications. Quartz’s account of the company’s overseas activity.

Quartz also named Crypto.com and Gemini Space Station as platforms with event-contract products, and said Coinbase offers access through Kalshi. Those comparisons do not determine Blockchain.com’s regulatory status.

Why pursue both a DCM and an FCM?

The two applications point to different functions: operating an exchange and providing derivatives brokerage. Seeking both could fit the company’s stated ambition to bring digital assets, derivatives, and positions on real-world events together in one platform. It does not, by itself, establish the exact products Blockchain.com intends to offer or how the proposed business would be structured.

Peter Smith, Blockchain.com’s CEO and co-founder, described that ambition in a statement reproduced by Quartz and attributed to CNBC: “Users should be able to manage their digital assets, trade derivatives, and take positions on real-world events easily, without jumping between different apps.” The statement as reported by Quartz.

What is changing in CFTC policy?

The applications arrive amid CFTC policy activity on both event contracts and crypto markets. The agency’s actions described below are proposals or preliminary rulemaking—not company-specific approvals.

Event contracts

On June 25, 2026, the CFTC announced a proposed reporting framework for certain fully collateralized event contracts and invited public comment. The announcement was a proposal, not a final rule. CFTC announcement on the proposed reporting framework.

Quartz also reported in July on a separate CFTC proposal that would assess certain event contracts case by case, including under categories identified for scrutiny by the Commodity Exchange Act and public-interest review. Quartz said the proposal stopped short of a categorical ban and discussed sports and election contracts. The status and details of that proposal should not be treated as a final determination about which contracts are allowed. Quartz’s report on the proposal.

Retail crypto transactions and markets

On October 5, 2026, the CFTC announced it had published an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking on a potential framework for certain retail crypto-asset transactions and markets. The agency said comments would inform possible future action; the notice is not an authorization for Blockchain.com. CFTC announcement on the advanced notice.

The CFTC also announced updated staff FAQs on September 24, 2026 addressing registrant activity involving crypto assets and blockchain technologies, including tokenized permitted investments and blockchain recordkeeping. That guidance reflects an evolving regulatory environment, but does not answer whether Blockchain.com’s applications will be granted. CFTC announcement on updated staff FAQs.

Why is prediction-market regulation contested?

Federal and state authorities are disputing who may regulate some prediction-market contracts. Quartz reported that the CFTC had sued nine states while asserting authority over federally registered platforms; states have treated some sports-related event contracts as gambling. The reporting describes active litigation, not settled law. The dispute therefore adds uncertainty, but does not establish how a future Blockchain.com product would be treated. Quartz’s report on the litigation.

What to watch next

The key developments are whether the CFTC acts on the reported applications, what products and customer groups the filings actually cover, and whether the relevant rulemaking or litigation changes the regulatory conditions for event contracts and retail crypto derivatives. The available reporting does not provide Blockchain.com’s application documents or a decision schedule, so neither approval nor a launch date can be inferred.
