Blizzard is revising how the Skyborne look in World of Warcraft: Forever, toning down the high-definition Skyborne Druid forms so they sit better beside the game’s original-era models. The company says the changes are meant to make the new faction fit the world rather than stand out from it. Standard Definition (SD) Skyborne player characters and SD Druid forms are also in development and are targeted for early 2027.
What Blizzard says it is changing
In its October 7, 2026 post, “World of Warcraft: Forever – The Future of Skyborne Visual Updates,” Blizzard Entertainment says its aim for the project is to uphold the original WoW-era aesthetic while giving players more choice in how they experience Azeroth. The company also says some visual ideas the team explored did not meet its goals for consistency and cohesion, and that it is revisiting some visuals as a result.
The clearest example Blizzard gives is the High Definition (HD) Skyborne Druid forms. The change is not a wholesale redesign. Blizzard lists three specific adjustments:

- More detailed fur: The forms gain “more detailed fur textures.”
- Adjusted saturation: The team “adjusted the color saturation,” which is the change most directly tied to the “blue elf” look in the headline.
Blizzard’s stated concern is that the Skyborne should reflect their exotic environment without clashing with the visual language of other creatures in the game.

Why the HD and SD options are being rethought
Blizzard had initially built the SD/HD toggle around races from the original World of Warcraft. Players then pointed out a problem with that approach. In the company’s words, “we have heard feedback that the HD Skyborne can be jarring by contrast when placed in the same world as the SD models and world, and we agree.”
In other words, the issue is not only how the HD models look on their own. An HD Skyborne character standing in an SD world can look out of place, and Blizzard has accepted that as a reason to bring the SD options forward for the Skyborne rather than leave them out.

Where the “look worse” framing comes from
The headline’s “look worse” wording is the phrasing used by PC Gamer, in Tyler Colp’s October 7, 2026 article, “Blizzard promises to make the blue elves in World of Warcraft: Forever look worse (positive).” The “(positive)” tag is the outlet’s own judgment. Blizzard does not describe the work as making the Skyborne look worse. Its language is about consistency, cohesion and fitting the original-era aesthetic.
PC Gamer’s report adds context that Blizzard’s post does not. It describes the Skyborne as a new faction of High Elves, compares their appearance to the Burning Crusade Blood Elves, and reports that players criticized how polished the new models looked next to older ones. Those observations belong to PC Gamer. They are not statements from Blizzard, and they should not be read as Blizzard’s reasons for the change beyond what its own post says.
