Blinkx did go public: the video-search company floated on London’s AIM in May 2007, after Autonomy planned to combine it with its consumer unit and spin it off. The proposed separation reflected a difference in focus—Autonomy sold enterprise-search software, while Blinkx searched consumer video.

Why Autonomy planned to spin off Blinkx

In an April 25, 2007 report, Network World described a plan for Autonomy to exercise an option over Blinkx shares, combine Blinkx with Autonomy’s consumer unit, and float the resulting business on London’s AIM. The report said the listing was expected the following month and that Autonomy would retain 10% of Blinkx’s ordinary shares after the IPO.

The strategic rationale was that the two businesses served different markets. Autonomy focused on enterprise search; Blinkx focused on consumer video search. A separation was presented as a way for Blinkx to concentrate on its own market and clients. Network World said the transaction was subject to tax clearances and customary conditions. It also reported that representatives of both companies declined to comment.

What Blinkx’s video search engine did

According to Network World’s 2007 account, Blinkx had indexed about 7 million hours of video. Its search approach went beyond metadata: it transcribed and indexed speech, allowing users to search for words spoken in a video. The company also made deals with content owners and licensed its service to other internet companies. These figures and descriptions concern Blinkx as reported in 2007.

From the announcement to first-day trading

Date What was reported
April 25, 2007 Network World reported the planned Autonomy transaction and an expected AIM listing the next month.
April 26, 2007 The Guardian covered the planned demerger and expected AIM listing, alongside analyst expectations for the offering. Those expectations were commentary, not transaction terms.
May 2007 Blinkx’s preserved company history says the company floated on AIM.
May 25, 2007 Search Engine Watch reported that Blinkx began trading at 45 pence, closed at 65 pence, and had a reported market capitalization of £180 million / $355 million.

The trading figures are a later report of first-day performance, not terms of the April announcement. Search Engine Watch described the move from 45 pence to 65 pence as a 40% rise.

How to interpret the reported valuation

Network World relayed a possible $150 million to $500 million valuation range, attributing it to The Times quoting financial analysts. That was a pre-listing estimate reported second-hand—not a confirmed offer valuation. The first-day share-price and market-capitalization figures were reported separately after trading began. A primary Autonomy filing or Blinkx prospectus is not available among the cited accounts, so final offer terms, proceeds, and allocation are not established here.
