Black tape on a white wire may be an attempt to identify that conductor as an ungrounded wire—often called a hot wire—in a limited wiring context. But the tape is not proof that the wire is actually hot, correctly connected, or compliant with the electrical code in force where you live. Treat an unfamiliar wire as uncertain, not as safe to handle.
What black tape on a white wire may indicate
In some cable assemblies, a white or gray insulated conductor may be reidentified for use as an ungrounded conductor. Black tape can serve as that identification when the applicable rules and installation conditions are met. NFPA code-development materials discussing NEC 200.7(C) describe this limited allowance for circuits of 50 volts or more: the conductor must be permanently reidentified at its terminations and at each location where it is visible and accessible. The marking must encircle the insulation and use a color other than white, gray, or green. NFPA code-development materials
That describes what the marking may have been intended to communicate. It does not establish the wire’s actual connection or whether it is energized now. A label or color marking is not a substitute for determining the circuit’s condition.

When the marking rule has limits
Cable assemblies
The described reidentification allowance applies in specified cable-assembly situations, not as a blanket rule for every white wire. The conductor’s marking must meet the applicable identification conditions; a short piece of tape in one visible spot does not, by itself, establish compliance. The local code edition and any amendments also matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Versatile Usage: Pack of 6 Rolls 3/4 inch width x 60 foot black vinyl electric tape, Flexible, stretchable construction ideal for electronic repairs including cable insulation, spliced wires, cable bundling
- Strong Adhesive: Crafted from super rubber adhesive, the electrical tape provides steadfast adherence, free from the risk of unexpected detachment over time for electrical safety.
- Easy to use: It is easy to tear and convenient to use, it can be torn by bare hand after taping cables
- Durable: Abrasion-resistant backing for durability, provides protective insulation to prevent wires from corrosion
- Use tips: To ensure optimal bonding, it is recommended to apply the electrical tape to clean and dry surfaces
Conductors in raceways
A white or gray conductor pulled into a raceway cannot be made an ungrounded conductor simply by adding tape or paint, according to EC&M’s explanations of the code. Mike Holt, EC&M (Jan. 1, 2009; based on the 2008 NEC) and Russ LeBlanc, EC&M (Apr. 2, 2020) explain this distinction. These articles provide context, not confirmation of the current requirements at a particular address.
Switch-loop applications
NFPA code-development material also describes a limitation for the listed switch-loop applications: a reidentified white or gray conductor supplies the switch; it is not used as the return conductor from the switch to the outlet. The exact rule depends on the adopted code and applicable installation details, so this should not be used to diagnose a particular circuit.

- Abrasion-resistant backing to keep wires well insulated
- Meets and conforms to UL and CSA building codes
- Performs down to -10 degrees Celsius/ 14 degrees Fahrenheit
- Vinyl tape for all-weather durability
- Pack includes 3 rolls of 0.75” x 50 ft of Flame Retardant Vinyl Electrical Tape
Does black tape make a white wire hot?
No. Tape can mark an intended function; it cannot make a wire energized, verify how it is connected, or prove that the installation follows local code. Nor does the absence of tape prove that a white conductor is neutral. Wire appearance alone is not enough to determine what an unfamiliar conductor does.

What to do if you find one
- Do not assume the wire is safe to touch or that the tape accurately describes its function.
- Do not remove or add tape as a way to test, repair, or certify the wiring.
- If the conductor’s purpose or condition is uncertain, leave it alone and contact a qualified electrician.
- For a code-compliance question, check the electrical code edition and amendments adopted by the authority having jurisdiction for the property. NFPA’s development documents show proposed and reviewed code language; they are not a local adoption lookup.
