For threaded black steel or iron gas piping, use a thread sealant whose label covers the fuel in the line and is compatible with both the pipe and fittings. The 2024 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) calls for a nonhardening sealant resistant to the gas’s chemical constituents and compatible with the materials being joined. RectorSeal T Plus 2 is one manufacturer-documented example for natural gas and iron; it is not a universal answer for every fuel, fitting, or jurisdiction.
What matters when choosing sealant for black gas pipe?
“Black piping” typically refers to black steel or iron gas pipe. It describes the pipe, not the color the sealant should be. Choose by the gas conveyed, the pipe and fitting materials, and the product’s current instructions—not by color or a generic “gas-rated” claim alone.
The 2024 IFGC §403.8.3 states: “Threaded joints shall be made using a thread joint sealing material. Thread joint sealing materials shall be nonhardening and shall be resistant to the chemical constituents of the gases to be conducted through the piping. Thread joint sealing materials shall be compatible with the pipe and fitting materials on which the sealing materials are used.” Read Chapter 4 of the 2024 IFGC.
This is a model-code requirement; it does not establish which edition or amendments apply to a particular home. Check the locally adopted fuel-gas code and, if needed, ask the authority having jurisdiction. Confirm the fuel and every fitting material against the sealant label and manufacturer instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- APPLICATION: RectorSeal No.5 is a non-hardening, slow-drying thread sealant made from special inert fillers dispersed in an oleoresinous base to facilitate its application to threaded pipe connections
- SOFT SETTING: Our pipe thread sealant is a soft-set, slow drying compound which seals, lubricates, and protects threaded pipe and fittings and will not dry out in the container
- POTABLE WATER SEALANT: RectorSeal No.5 pipe dope thread sealant lubricates and protects pipe threads; contains no metal; permits easy break out with no damage to threads
- PIPE COMPATIBILITY: For pipe made of galvanized steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, polyethylene, reinforced fiberglass, and pvc. do not use on abs or cpvc; for natural gas and water lines up to 2" and pressure up to 100 psi, the piping system may be placed into immediate service; other services are recommended 24 hours after application
- FOR THE TRADESMAN: RectorSeal is recognized as a leading provider of quality solutions for the professional trades serving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC/R), plumbing, electrical, and construction markets
Which documented products are candidates?
| Product | What the cited manufacturer information supports | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RectorSeal T Plus 2 | RectorSeal describes it as a non-hardening thread sealant containing PTFE and synthetic fibers, recommends it for natural gas, and lists iron among applicable piping materials. | Check the current label and instructions for the specific fuel and fitting materials in the installation. The cited information does not establish suitability for every gas service or local code. |
| Oatey Gripp | Oatey’s 2019 commercial catalog lists black iron as a compatible material and natural gas and propane among line contents. | The cited catalog is dated 2019; verify current packaging, specifications, and availability before relying on it. |
The manufacturer descriptions support these as examples to evaluate, not as a performance ranking. The cited sources do not provide comparative testing under defined furnace-piping conditions.
Check the threads and parts before assembly
Sealant cannot fix damaged threads or defective pipe. The 2024 IFGC §403.8 requires metallic pipe and fitting threads to be taper pipe threads conforming to ASME B1.20.1. Section 403.8.1 says not to use stripped, chipped, corroded, or otherwise damaged threads; §403.6 says visible defects in pipe or fittings should not be repaired and defective parts must be replaced. Consult the locally applicable code for the requirements governing your installation.

- Country of manufacture: United States
- Manufacturer: Rectorseal

- Confirm the pipe and fitting materials and the gas the line carries.
- Check that the product is nonhardening, resistant to the gas, and compatible with both materials.
- Read and follow the current product label and manufacturer instructions.
- Do not treat sealant as a repair for damaged threads or defective components.
Why “black pipe sealant” can be misleading
Black pipe usually means black iron or steel pipe; the sealant need not be black. The cited product examples include RectorSeal T Plus 2, which is described as white, and Gripp, which appears as a black compound in the cited older catalog. Color alone does not establish fuel compatibility, material compatibility, or code acceptance.
