The best camera for black-and-white photography depends on whether you want a camera that records only monochrome or one that can also capture color. The Leica Q3 Monochrom is a dedicated option with a fixed 28 mm lens; Fujifilm X-series cameras with ACROS and the Nikon Zf offer monochrome controls while preserving color capture. There is no neutral head-to-head test here that establishes one universal image-quality winner.

Choose between a monochrome-only camera and a color-capable camera

A dedicated monochrome sensor is for photographers who have decided they do not need color files. Leica says the Q3 Monochrom records brightness data only and has no color filters. A color-capable camera is the more flexible choice if you want to make black-and-white images in-camera but may also want color versions of a scene.

  • Choose dedicated monochrome if black and white is your committed way of working and the Q3 Monochrom’s fixed wide-angle lens suits your photography.
  • Choose a color-capable camera if you want in-camera monochrome looks without giving up color capture or interchangeable-lens options.

The available specifications and recommendations do not amount to a controlled image-quality comparison across these cameras, so treat model suggestions as options to consider rather than measured rankings.

Leica Q3 Monochrom: a dedicated camera with a fixed lens

The Leica Q3 Monochrom is built specifically for monochrome photography. Leica specifies a 60 MP monochrome sensor, with capture settings of 60, 36, or 18 MP. Its fixed Summilux lens is 28 mm f/1.7, so this is a compact full-frame camera rather than an interchangeable-lens system. Leica lists optical image stabilization, a tilting touch display, a 5.76 MP OLED viewfinder, ISO sensitivity up to 200,000, and video recording up to 8K. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test findings. Leica Q3 Monochrom specifications.

What the fixed 28 mm lens means

A 28 mm view is a wide-angle perspective that can suit street, travel, environmental portrait, and documentary photography. It cannot be swapped for a longer or shorter physical lens. Leica’s launch release describes digital zoom framing from 28 to 90 mm; that changes the crop, not the lens or its optical reach. Consider whether you are comfortable composing around the same focal length before choosing this camera. Leica’s Q3 Monochrom launch release.

Filters and monochrome controls

Leica says Q3 accessories are compatible, including red, green, yellow, and orange color filters for contrast adjustment. These are optional creative accessories, not requirements for making monochrome photographs. The camera’s dedicated sensor means its files contain no color information; converting such a file back to color is not possible.

Color-capable alternatives: Fujifilm ACROS and Nikon Zf

Color cameras can make black-and-white photographs using in-camera monochrome profiles or simulations. This approach lets you preview or create monochrome output while retaining the ability to capture color. Digital Camera World’s July 14, 2026 guide highlights the Fujifilm X-S20 for ACROS simulations and the Nikon Zf for a dedicated black-and-white control. These are editorial selections, not results from a neutral cross-camera test. Digital Camera World’s 2026 black-and-white camera guide.

Fujifilm X-series with ACROS

Fujifilm’s X-series guide describes monochrome and ACROS film simulations, with simulated yellow, green, and red filter effects, plus highlight and shadow adjustments. Those controls can shape contrast and tonal rendering in-camera. The guide dates from approximately 2018, so it establishes Fujifilm’s approach rather than confirming that every mode or menu name is unchanged on every current body. Leica M11 Monochrom Digital Rangefinder Camera, Black
  • The M11 Monochrom leverages the M11's high-res back-illuminated sensor. It modifies the 60MP full-frame CMOS by removing the color filter array (CFA), enabling exclusive capture of monochromatic images with enhanced clarity, depth, and resolution using luminance values. This omission expands the sensitivity range to ISO 125-200000, surpassing color-enabled M11 cameras.
  • The M11 Monochrom maintains the Triple Resolution Technology introduced in the M11. This innovative pixel binning technique enables photographers to choose between 60MP, 36MP, or 18MP output. Each resolution utilizes the entire sensor area, and lower resolutions benefit from improved dynamic range and reduced noise levels.
  • The Maestro III processor enhances the M11 Monochrom with swift processing, enabling continuous shooting at up to 4.5 fps and supporting the Triple Resolution Technology. It also contributes to achieving a broader sensitivity range compared to earlier M camera models. The ISO 125-200000 range features a lower base ISO, resulting in improved detail, while the higher top end provides increased flexibility for low-light scenarios.
  • The M11 Monochrom is a manual photo-only camera that incorporates numerous enhancements, making it the most contemporary M camera. It features an electronic shutter with speeds up to 1/16,000 sec, ideal for faster f/0.95 lenses without requiring ND filters. A mechanical shutter supports speeds up to 1/4000 sec and flash sync at 1/180 sec.
  • The M11 Monochrom features a revised monochromatic design, devoid of color. The Leica Red Dot is absent, the viewfinder has a dark chrome tint, dial engravings are filled with white and gray paint, and shutter/bayonet lock buttons are black. The top plate discreetly bears the engraving "MONOCHROM."

Fujifilm X-S20 and Nikon Zf

The X-S20 and Nikon Zf are worth investigating if you want a modern color-capable camera with convenient monochrome handling. Before buying, verify the current specifications, price, stock, and firmware-specific behavior for your region and intended lens setup; the cited editorial guide does not establish those details as fixed or universal.

Which type fits your photography?

Question Leica Q3 Monochrom Color-capable camera
Can it capture color? No. It records monochrome brightness data only, according to Leica. Yes; monochrome simulations do not remove color capability.
Lens choice Fixed 28 mm f/1.7 lens; digital framing up to 90 mm is cropping, not optical zoom. Depends on the body and lens system; interchangeable lenses provide focal-length choice.
Monochrome workflow Every capture is monochrome. Use in-camera monochrome modes such as Fujifilm ACROS, or retain color capture.
Best fit Photographers certain they want monochrome-only capture and a fixed wide-angle perspective. Photographers who want black-and-white output but may also need color or lens flexibility.

For a first camera dedicated to black and white, the key decision is not simply sensor resolution: it is whether giving up color and accepting one focal length fits how you shoot. If either restriction sounds limiting, a color-capable body with monochrome controls is the safer practical choice.
