The Arcade 1971–1999: The Stories Behind Classic Coin-Ops, Told by Their Creators is an interview-led history of 120 arcade games, written by Paul Drury and published by Bitmap Books. Its focus is not simply which games became classics, but how their creators made them: Drury says he spent more than twenty years interviewing programmers, designers, artists and musicians. The publisher lists the book as a 408-page hardback with an included PDF.

What makes this arcade history different?

The book is built around first-person accounts from the people who made arcade games. Bitmap Books says Drury’s interviews are accompanied by personal photographs, design sketches, coding notes and licensed concept art. That approach offers readers a view into development decisions and working conditions, rather than only a retrospective account of a game’s release or reputation.

In a 1 October 2026 interview with Creative Bloq, Drury described the creators as people improvising rather than following a fully settled plan: “These were made by human beings who were fallible… They didn’t plan things out meticulously first, and were working out as they went along.” The remark captures the book’s emphasis on the process behind the machines and games that could seem to appear fully formed to players. Drury recalled of arcade machines in his childhood: “They just sort of arrived.”

Which games and creators are included?

Bitmap Books lists 120 titles spanning 1971 to 1999. The selection begins with early arcade landmarks such as Computer Space, Pong and Space Invaders, and reaches later releases including Dance Dance Revolution, SoulCalibur and House of the Dead. These examples illustrate the book’s range; the count is a curated selection, not a promise to include every acclaimed coin-op.

The publisher’s selection rule is significant: a game was included when Drury could locate and interview at least one original creator. Bitmap Books explicitly notes that some much-loved games are absent for that reason. The contents therefore reflect interview access as well as historical importance, and the publisher’s own FAQ addresses the question of why particular arcade games are not featured.

Creative Bloq reports that more than 90 programmers, designers, artists and musicians contributed. That contributor figure is Creative Bloq’s report; Bitmap Books describes the interview work as extending over more than twenty years.

Bitmap Books quotes Bushnell describing the appeal of hearing how an industry began: “Hearing the OG story is always fun. Going from nothing to something feels a bit like magic, and Paul has captured that magic in all these stories.” Pong creator Al Alcorn calls it “A very well researched account of how a new industry was created.” These are endorsements, while the book’s reported contents and format are the practical basis for judging whether it suits a reader.
