Bitcoin was marginally higher for the week in one late-Friday, October 2, 2026 market snapshot, after a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report reduced traders’ expectations of an October Federal Reserve rate hike. The move was not uniform across reports: contemporaneous outlets quoted materially different Bitcoin prices and weekly gains, so the figures below are tied to their sources and reporting windows. Seasonal “Uptober” optimism offered another reason for a positive outlook, but October’s track record is not a forecast.

Why was Bitcoin slightly up for the week?

The exact-title report, an Investing.com story syndicated by Yahoo Finance Australia, said Bitcoin was down 0.1% at $84,501.6 late Friday, October 2, but up 0.5% for the week. It linked the modest weekly gain in part to a positive SEC-related regulatory development and to reduced expectations of an October Fed hike following weak employment data. That is the report’s interpretation of market drivers, not proof that either factor alone caused Bitcoin’s move.

A separate Decrypt report published October 2 put Bitcoin around $86,757, up 2% on the week. The reports therefore do not establish one definitive Friday price or weekly change; those numbers can differ with the timestamp, data source, and measurement window. Treat them as separate snapshots rather than combining them into a single price series.

Did the jobs report change the odds of a Fed rate hike?

The exact-title report said the September U.S. employment report showed 29,000 new nonfarm jobs, against an estimate of 89,000. It also reported that July and August payrolls had been revised down by 60,000 combined and that unemployment stood at 4.2%. Taken together, those figures were read as evidence of a softer labor market.

At that report’s snapshot, market-implied odds were about 23% for a quarter-point Fed hike in October and 77% for no change. These were futures-market expectations reported at the time, not a Fed decision or a live probability. Expectations can move as new data and Fed communications arrive.

Lower rate expectations can support risk appetite because investors may anticipate less restrictive financial conditions. But the relationship is not automatic: Treasury yields and bond-market stress can also weigh on risk assets, including Bitcoin. A jobs report, rate pricing, and Bitcoin’s subsequent return should not be treated as a proven cause-and-effect chain.

What does “Uptober” mean, and is it reliable?

“Uptober” is crypto-market shorthand for the idea that Bitcoin tends to perform well in October. One Decrypt report citing CoinGlass gave an average October return of 19.92% and a median return of 14.71% since 2013. The same report said October 2025 fell 3.69%, its account describing that as only the third negative October in the period.

The exact-title report used a separate historical calculation: Bitcoin had risen in 10 of the previous 15 Octobers, with average gains of 27.4% in positive Octobers and average declines of 13% in negative ones. The periods and methods are not established as equivalent, so these figures should not be combined. Both summaries show historical seasonality, not a dependable prediction; a strong average can coexist with losing months.

What should Bitcoin watchers monitor next?

  • Labor and inflation releases: New data can shift expectations about the Fed’s path.
  • Treasury yields and bond-market conditions: Renewed Treasury selling may offset optimism about lower expected rates.
  • Fed communications and decisions: Futures pricing reflects market expectations; it is distinct from official guidance and the eventual policy decision.
  • Official SEC developments: The regulatory item cited as supportive in the exact-title report should be followed through official updates rather than assumed to represent a settled outcome.
  • Timestamped market data: Check the outlet or exchange, timestamp, and comparison window before comparing Bitcoin prices or weekly returns.

Decrypt also reported that New York Fed President John Williams said there was “no need for urgency” after September’s hike. That was an attributed comment in separate coverage, not a statement that the Fed had committed to a particular October decision. In the same Decrypt coverage, Algoz’s Stephen Wundke said “traders feel there is more upside currently than there is downside”; this reflects his view, not a consensus forecast.
