Bitcoin’s repeated pullbacks from around $87,000 show that its near-term advance has stalled, but they do not prove the broader recovery is over. CoinDesk reported on October 6, 2026, that BTC had fallen to about $85,600 after sellers rejected a move above $87,000 for the third time since September 23. Higher local lows offer a counterpoint; whether support holds and demand returns will matter more than the rejection alone.

Why Bitcoin keeps meeting resistance near $87,000

CoinDesk’s October 6 report described three failed attempts to move above $87,000 since September 23. That makes the area a recent resistance zone: sellers have appeared there repeatedly in the sessions covered by the report. It is not a permanent ceiling, and a brief move above it would not by itself confirm a breakout.

The Block reported on October 2 that Glassnode had identified a cluster of resting sell orders near $87,000 in a Binance BTCUSDT order-book snapshot. Such orders can change or disappear; that dated snapshot is evidence of supply at that time, not a standing market rule.

CoinDesk also reported that BTC had been making higher local lows. FxPro analyst Alex Kuptsikevich said price was nearing the apex of a triangle formed by horizontal resistance and rising support, while noting that bulls had not built sufficient momentum. He told CoinDesk: “The price has approached the apex of the triangle formed by horizontal resistance and rising support. We should therefore be prepared for increased volatility should the price break out of this pattern.” This is a chart interpretation and a volatility outlook, not a prediction of breakout direction or timing.

Is BTC running out of steam, or consolidating?

The same price action can support two different readings. The evidence becomes more useful when price structure, demand and positioning, and the macro backdrop are considered together.

Reading What supports it What would add confirmation
Momentum is fading Repeated rejection near $87,000 and the lack of bullish momentum described by CoinDesk on October 6. Binance Research also identified higher Treasury yields and renewed rate expectations as headwinds to BTC’s recovery. A break of nearby support accompanied by weaker spot demand or ETF outflows, particularly if yields and rate expectations remain adverse.
Consolidation within a recovery Higher local lows in CoinDesk’s October 6 account. Binance Research’s September 28 report described a reclaim of the 50-week moving average and a September golden cross as supportive signals, while cautioning that both needed follow-through and were not infallible. Support holds and BTC sustains a move above resistance with spot demand behind it.

These are conditional interpretations, not probability-weighted forecasts. IG’s September 28 analysis characterized the retreat it was discussing then as a test of the rally rather than clear evidence of reversal. That assessment refers to its date and market context, not necessarily the same live conditions as CoinDesk’s October 6 report.

Level or range Source and date How the source framed it
Near $87,000 CoinDesk, October 6; The Block, October 2, citing Glassnode’s order-book snapshot CoinDesk reported repeated rejections; The Block cited a cluster of resting sell orders. A sustained break and hold would be more informative than a brief intraday move.
$87,400 resistance; $82,500 support QCP Capital, as reported by The Block on October 2 QCP identified these as levels to watch and described $87,400 as a gateway toward $90,000 in its view.
$84,000–$87,722 weekly range Bitfinex Alpha, October 5 Bitfinex’s base case for that week; it identified $87,722 as the yearly open. This was one firm’s conditional outlook, not a consensus forecast.
Daily closes below $84,000; then $81,300 Bitfinex Alpha, October 5 Bitfinex treated daily closes below $84,000 as a break of its stated range and $81,300 as a deeper recovery test under its scenario.

Bitfinex said that sustained trading below $81,300 alongside ETF outflows and short-term-holder SOPR below 1.0 would weaken the recovery. SOPR, or spent output profit ratio, compares the value of coins when spent with their value when acquired; below 1.0 indicates that coins are being spent at a loss on that measure. These are Bitfinex’s scenario conditions, not universal market thresholds.

What ETF flows and positioning can tell you

ETF-flow figures in the cited reports describe different dates and should not be combined as though they were one current snapshot. Binance Research reported that cumulative net flows had reached a negative $5.69 billion at a trough on July 13, 2026, then described a recovery. It said spot BTC ETFs recorded $999 million in inflows on September 21, which it called the largest single-day inflow of 2026 as of its September 28 publication. IG separately reported $2.4 billion in US spot Bitcoin ETF net inflows for the week ending September 25. IG cautioned that ETF flows do not necessarily translate into immediate, one-for-one spot-market purchases.

For the price setup, the direction and persistence of flows matter alongside spot buying: strong reported inflows are more supportive if market demand is also visible in spot trading, while outflows combined with falling support would strengthen the bearish case. Bitfinex also recommended watching whether open interest grows faster than spot volume and whether funding remains near the range it cited. Rising derivatives exposure without comparable spot activity can make positioning more important to the move; the cited commentary does not establish a current, independently verified reading for those measures.

How the macro backdrop could affect the setup

CoinDesk’s October 6 report cited a 5.32% 10-year US Treasury yield and a 4.83% two-year yield. Binance Research linked higher Treasury yields and renewed rate expectations to pressure on BTC’s recovery; cited analyses also pointed to oil and inflation as potential sources of pressure on risk assets. These factors can weigh on BTC even if its chart continues to show higher lows. The reported yield figures are dated observations, not live readings.

What would change the outlook?

  • A more convincing bullish case: BTC holds support, then sustains a move above the recent resistance zone, with spot buying and ETF demand supporting the move. The cited sources do not establish a price breakout as confirmed.
  • A more convincing bearish case: BTC loses support and the decline coincides with weaker spot demand or ETF outflows, worsening derivatives conditions, or a tougher macro backdrop. Bitfinex’s dated breakdown conditions are one analyst’s scenario, not a universal rule.
  • A continued range: BTC remains between support and resistance without sustained demand or a decisive breakdown. In that case, the repeated tests show a market still negotiating supply, not a confirmed reversal or breakout.

The next useful evidence is therefore not another isolated touch of $87,000, but whether price can hold its rising support and reclaim resistance with demand behind it—or whether support fails as demand and macro conditions deteriorate.
