There is no verified shortlist of legal online bitcoin casinos for Australians. ACMA says providers cannot offer online casino services to people in Australia, and prohibited services must not be advertised here. So if you searched “Are bitcoin casinos legal in Australia?”, the key point is that using bitcoin does not make an online casino lawful.
Are online bitcoin casinos legal in Australia?
ACMA says the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer some online services to people in Australia. Online casinos are among the prohibited services, and ACMA says prohibited services must not be advertised in Australia.
Casino-style services include poker, blackjack and roulette. An offshore site may still be accessible to Australians or target them, but that does not give it Australian authorization or the consumer protections associated with a licensed service. ACMA warns: “If you gamble online using a company that operates illegally, you risk losing your money.” If an illegal operator withholds winnings or treats a customer poorly, ACMA says it may be unable to help.

No. ACMA states that since 11 June 2024, consumers cannot use a credit card or digital currency to place bets under the applicable Australian online betting rules. Bitcoin is digital currency, not a workaround that makes a prohibited casino service legal. Avoid treating crypto deposits as a way around Australian gambling rules.

What does ACMA’s provider register tell you?
ACMA advises checking its register of licensed interactive wagering providers before using an online wagering service. ACMA says an online wagering service must be on the register to operate in Australia.
The register is not a list of legal online casinos. Interactive wagering and online casino services are distinct: a provider’s listing for wagering does not authorize it to offer casino games. The register is time-sensitive; ACMA’s search result showed it was last updated 7 September 2026, so consult the live register for current entries and do not rely on an old list.
What risks should you consider with offshore casino sites?
- Money and withdrawals: ACMA warns that you risk losing money when you use an illegal gambling operator. If it withholds winnings, the regulator may be unable to help.
- Fewer consumer protections: ACMA says illegal services do not provide the same consumer protections as a licensed service.
- Crypto may complicate recovery: A bitcoin payment does not change the service’s legal status or provide the protections of an Australian-authorized casino. Do not assume a transaction can be reversed or recovered if there is a dispute.
- Advertising is also restricted: ACMA says prohibited gambling services must not be advertised in Australia, so promotional claims are not evidence that a site is legal.
What changed in 2026, and when do the reforms start?
Parliament passed gambling reforms on 19 August 2026. ACMA describes measures including restrictions on gambling advertising and a ban on commissions to staff or affiliates based on customer activity. The Australian Government says the reforms commence from 1 January 2027. That date matters: the reforms should not be described as already in force in 2026. The precise scope and implementation guidance, particularly for affiliate arrangements, should be checked against current official guidance.
