Yes: leave suitable natural materials—such as dead twigs and leaves—where birds can reach them, and keep plastic, string, yarn and other hazardous litter out of nesting areas. Birds’ use of rubbish does not show that it is safe or helpful. You do not need to buy a feeder or nesting-material holder; a quiet patch of leaves and vegetation may be enough.

What can you offer birds to build nests?

Start with materials already present in a suitable part of your yard. Cornell Lab’s nesting-material guidance recommends leaving fallen leaves and twigs where appropriate and lists these materials as suitable:

  • Dead twigs and dead leaves
  • Dry grass that has not been treated with pesticides
  • Feathers and plant fluff or down
  • Moss, bark strips and pine needles

Offer clean, natural materials rather than collecting material from an active nest or disturbing birds. Different species select different materials, and they may ignore what you provide. For birds that use mud—including swallows, phoebes and robins—a muddy area may be more useful than a bundle of fibers.

How should you leave nesting material out?

There is no need to buy a special holder. Leaving appropriate leaves and twigs in place is the simplest option. Cornell also describes a clean wire-mesh suet cage, mesh bag, tree crevice, vegetation, open-topped berry basket or purpose-made wire holder as ways to present material.

Choose a location where the material will stay clean and will not become litter. A holder does not make unsafe material safe, and birds may not use it. Avoid tightly packing or tying fibers together: birds should be able to take what they want without encountering long loops or strands.

What should you never put out?

Do not offer plastic strips, tinsel, cellophane, aluminum foil or dryer lint. Dryer lint can become crumbly after getting wet and drying, and synthetic or persistent rubbish can remain in a nest or the environment. Keep string, twine, yarn and long, thin hair away from nesting areas: strands can wrap around a bird’s legs or neck. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warns that string, twine and yarn can cut off circulation and be fatal. Audubon also advises against human hair; be cautious with pet fur because treatments or chemicals may expose birds to substances not intended for them.

Why do birds use rubbish—and does it help them?

Human-made items turn up in nests for several possible reasons. The Natural History Museum explains that natural materials may be scarce in towns; some debris may strengthen a structure, contribute to display, or help repel ectoparasites. Senior Curator of Birds Douglas Russell says “human-made materials such as foil, plastic strings and pieces of clothing, are all found in birds’ nests.” That observation establishes that such items occur, not how common they are or whether they benefit birds.

The effects are not uniform. A 2022 study in Science of the Total Environment found a negative relationship between anthropogenic nest materials and breeding success in the blue tit population it studied. That is an association in a particular study setting, not proof that every piece of debris harms every species. A review in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B discusses potential benefits, such as signaling or ectoparasite protection, alongside costs including entanglement and reduced insulation. Outcomes can depend on the material, bird species, nest and exposure.

What helps beyond offering materials?

Keep litter from reaching places where birds nest, and leave suitable natural debris in place when it is safe and practical. A varied garden with regionally appropriate native plants can support access to natural nesting materials; Audubon’s bird-friendly yard guidance recommends native plants. The right choices depend on your region, so use local planting guidance rather than treating a generic plant list as universal.

Nest boxes are relevant only to species that use cavities and are not a general replacement for natural nesting material. UK government planning guidance mentions boxes for some priority species, including house sparrow, starling and swift; those recommendations are specific to their context and should not be treated as universal guidance. Check local wildlife authorities for species-specific advice, and do not disturb an active nest.
