BioSolar Leaf is Arborea’s microalgae cultivation system, designed to grow photosynthetic organisms on panel-like structures. Imperial College London announced funding for an outdoor pilot at its White City South Site in April 2019, but that announcement does not establish that the installation was completed, is operating today, or has measurably reduced pollution in London.
What is BioSolar Leaf?
Arborea describes BioSolar Leaf as a cultivation system for microalgae, diatoms and phytoplankton. The organisms grow on large, panel-like structures that can be installed on land or buildings. The system is intended to use photosynthesis to take up carbon dioxide and release oxygen while producing organic biomass for food ingredients. These are the system’s proposed functions, not verified results from the London site. Imperial’s 2019 announcement describes the concept and the intended outputs.
What did Imperial announce for London?
On 29 April 2019, Imperial College London said it would fund development of an outdoor pilot at the White City Campus South Site. The announcement framed the project as a real-world demonstration, with local outreach also among its aims. It documented a plan; it is not confirmation that the pilot was built, remains operational, or achieved a particular pollution-removal rate.

Imperial’s Associate Provost (Academic Planning), Professor Neil Alford, said: “Air pollution is one of London’s most urgent challenges, and Imperial is committed to finding sustainable and resilient solutions to this threat.” Arborea founder and CEO Julian Melchiorri described the pilot’s intended functions as producing food additives while purifying air, producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. Those statements explain the project’s rationale and goals; they are not independent measurements of its effects.

What does the “100 trees” comparison mean?
Imperial’s announcement attributed to Arborea’s team a claim that, for a given surface area, the system could remove carbon dioxide and produce oxygen at a rate equivalent to 100 trees. Treat this as a developer comparison, not an independently established performance figure. The announcement does not provide a direct field evaluation that verifies the equivalence for the White City pilot.
What do the later project records show?
European Commission CORDIS records provide context about Arborea’s food-production work, but project objectives and funding records do not demonstrate that the London installation reached commercial deployment.

- The H2020 BioSolar Leaf project focused on feasibility and microalgae-derived food ingredients, with validation intended in collaboration with food producers.
- A later Horizon Europe project lists ArboreaBioFoods LDA as coordinator and describes 2022–2023 objectives to develop a large-scale microalgae bioreactor and advance toward scale-up for food ingredients and protein commodities. CORDIS records an EU contribution of €2,348,873 for this project and 40% climate-action tracking; these are funding and accounting figures, not measurements of air-pollution removal.
Does the evidence show that BioSolar Leaf can clean London air?
The available project records and announcement do not establish current operating status or quantified air-quality outcomes for the White City pilot. Nor do they provide a direct independent field evaluation of BioSolar Leaf. In particular, the proposed uptake of carbon dioxide should not be conflated with measured removal of health-relevant local pollutants: the cited announcement does not report pollutant-specific removal rates.
Evidence about other urban greening approaches cannot fill that gap. A peer-reviewed study of two adjacent green-roofed and conventional buildings in Sydney describes a limited and variable evidence base; translating leaf-scale measurements or models into effects on ambient air is difficult, and outcomes depend on plant choice, weather and urban form. That study is context about green roofs, not a test of BioSolar Leaf or a measurement from London. Read the study.

How to assess future claims about the technology
A useful evaluation would identify what pollutant was measured, how much was removed, and under what site and operating conditions. It should also make clear whether results come from a field installation or a model, and distinguish greenhouse-gas uptake from changes in local pollutants that affect health. The cited BioSolar Leaf sources do not supply enough site-specific data to score the London project on those measures.
