To host Biohazard: Project Genesis, use the dedicated Biohazard_Beta_0.4.6.1_server_pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, run it with Java 17, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and budget about 8 GB of RAM. Every player must install the identical modpack version. The guide below covers a self-hosted installation, network access, macOS fixes, updates, backups, performance, and the managed-hosting alternative promoted by the project.
What Biohazard: Project Genesis is
Biohazard: Project Genesis is an open-world, story-driven zombie-apocalypse modpack built for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. Its design combines a quest campaign with multiplayer survival, radiation and fungal-infection systems, evolving horrors, and more than 100 weapons. Void Cube Studios describes it as a “fully custom apocalyptic modpack built around immersion, progression, and a cohesive universe.”
The project remains in active development, so a server is tied closely to the exact pack release. A client that is merely on Minecraft 1.20.1 is not sufficient: the Forge loader, mods, configuration files, and scripts must match the server pack.

CurseForge listed 877,024 downloads on its August 20, 2026 snapshot and 951,681 on the September 13 release-page snapshot. Those figures indicate use of the pack, not a guaranteed player capacity or a performance benchmark.

What you need before installing
- A computer or virtual server with enough free memory to allocate approximately 8 GB to Java while leaving memory for the operating system and other services.
- Java 17 installed and available from the command line.
- The dedicated server-pack archive for the release you intend to run. Do not substitute the client download.
- Permission to create files, run Java processes, and configure your firewall or router if players will connect from outside your home network.
- A client installation using the same Biohazard release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge.
- A backup location for the world and server configuration before every upgrade.
No specific CPU model, storage requirement, maximum player count, or managed-host price is published here. Treat those as workload-dependent rather than fixed specifications.
Install a self-hosted server
Use a new, dedicated directory for the server. Keeping the pack separate from unrelated Minecraft instances makes backups, upgrades, and troubleshooting much safer.

- Download the server pack. Obtain
Biohazard_Beta_0.4.6.1_server_pack, not the client ZIP. Extract it into the directory that will hold the server. - Check Java. Open Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt in that directory and run
java -version. Confirm that the reported major version is 17. If another Java version is selected, correct the system PATH or use the full path to the Java 17 executable before continuing. - Install Forge when necessary. If the archive does not already contain a working Forge server installation, download the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1 and run
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServer. Use the installer and files intended for 1.20.1; do not mix loader versions. - Start the server once. Run the start script supplied by the pack, or launch the generated Forge server command with approximately
-Xmx8G. The first boot can take several minutes while Forge and the mods register files and create the initial world. - Accept the EULA. Stop the process if it remains running, open
eula.txt, change the setting toeula=true, save the file, and start the server again. You must accept the EULA before players can connect. - Wait for a complete startup. Do not interrupt the first generation cycle. A usable server should finish loading and present a console ready for commands. If it exits, read the final error and the relevant log before changing files.
- Record the instance. Note the server directory, Java executable, start command, pack version, and backup location. This record prevents an update from accidentally using a different Java installation or world folder.
Why the server pack matters
A client archive contains files intended to launch a player. A dedicated server pack normally includes the server-side layout, Forge installation instructions, configuration, and start scripts. Using the wrong archive can produce missing-mod errors, client-only classes on a server, or a server that appears to start but cannot accept matching clients.
Configure memory and the first launch
Begin with about 8 GB allocated through -Xmx8G. The value controls Java’s maximum heap; it is not the total RAM the machine needs. Leave additional memory for the operating system, Java’s non-heap allocations, file cache, and any other services. If the host has only 8 GB in total, allocating the entire amount to Java can make the machine unstable.

Use the start script supplied with the release whenever possible. If you edit a command yourself, keep the pack’s existing Forge arguments and change only the memory setting you understand. Do not launch a second instance against the same world directory: two Java processes writing one world can corrupt it.
Make the server reachable
Local play and internet play have different requirements.

Players on the same home network
- Find the host computer’s local IP address.
- Start the server and confirm it has finished loading.
- Give that local address and the configured server port to players on the same network.
- Ensure the host firewall allows the Java process or the server’s configured port.
Players outside the home network
- Reserve or otherwise stabilize the host computer’s local IP address so a forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- Allow the configured server port through the operating-system firewall.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule from the router’s external interface to the host computer and the same internal port.
- Give remote players the public address and port. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than from inside the same LAN.
- Do not expose administrative services or remote-desktop ports just to make Minecraft reachable.
Exact router labels vary by manufacturer, and no required port number is specified. Use the port shown in the server’s configuration and start script rather than assuming a different value.
Install the matching client
Every participant should install the same Biohazard release as the server, with Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. “Close enough” versions are not safe with an actively developed pack: a changed mod, configuration, datapack, or script can prevent a connection or alter world behavior.

- Compare the client pack version with the server’s archive name before troubleshooting networking.
- Do not copy a single player’s modified configuration into the server unless the pack instructions call for it.
- When an update is announced, update the server and all clients as one coordinated change.
macOS compatibility and launch crashes
The current release notes report that Impossible Library was removed and include Mac compatibility changes. Mac users may still need to disable CraftPresence before launch. The general project listing also warns about these Mac launch crashes.
- Close the launcher.
- Open the Biohazard instance’s installed mod list or profile directory.
- Disable or remove CraftPresence for the client that is failing to launch.
- Launch again with Java 17 and check the log if the crash continues.
Do not remove unrelated mods at random. If disabling CraftPresence resolves the crash, keep that change documented so a future pack update can be checked against it. The server itself should continue to use the files supplied by the dedicated server pack unless its release notes specify otherwise.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting is the better fit when you want direct control of files and hardware and are comfortable maintaining Java, networking, backups, and updates. Managed hosting trades some low-level control for a web panel, provider-managed infrastructure, and support.

Backups and safe updates
Back up the world before every modpack or Forge update. Release notes for 0.4.5 and 0.4.6.1 discuss save carry-over and fixes, but a release note is not a substitute for a restorable copy.
- Announce maintenance and stop new players from joining.
- Save and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world directory and the server configuration to storage outside the live instance. Include any custom scripts or permissions files you rely on.
- Label the backup with the pack version and date.
- Install the new server pack in a separate directory or preserve a complete rollback copy.
- Start the updated server and watch the console for errors before allowing players back in.
- Have one player verify quests, inventories, dimensions, and other important progression before declaring the update complete.
Never test an unproven update on the only copy of a long-running world. Keeping the previous server directory intact makes rollback considerably simpler than trying to reconstruct removed files.

Start with the release’s approximate 8 GB heap guidance, then observe actual behavior. More allocated memory cannot fix every bottleneck; excessive heap can also increase garbage-collection pauses if the host is starved of system memory.
- Allow the first boot and initial world generation to finish before judging steady-state performance.
- Keep the server process, world, and logs on reliable storage with free space.
- Limit unnecessary background applications on a self-hosted machine.
- Schedule restarts only when they address a demonstrated issue; document the time so players know when the world is unavailable.
- Watch for repeated errors, long pauses, or runaway entity counts instead of reacting to one temporary spike.
Release 0.4.5 disabled hordeMultiplying by default to address an extreme zombie-count issue and included performance and stability work. If you are upgrading from an older configuration, check that this setting has not been re-enabled unintentionally. Do not increase it to create a larger horde unless you have tested the resulting load on your hardware and player population.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“Java is not recognized” or the wrong version appears
Run java -version in the same shell used to start the server. Install Java 17 or correct PATH ordering, then repeat the check. If multiple Java installations exist, edit the start script to call the Java 17 executable explicitly.
The server stops immediately on first launch
Check whether eula.txt was created and set eula=true. Confirm that you launched from the extracted server directory and that the Forge installer completed. Read the final log lines for a missing file, permission error, or Java mismatch before reinstalling anything.

Players receive missing-mod or mismatched-version errors
Compare the server archive and every client profile. Reinstall the exact 0.4.6.1 client pack if the server is on that release, and remove accidental extra mods from the client. Minecraft 1.20.1 alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Remote players cannot connect, but local players can
Check the host firewall, router forwarding destination, configured port, and public address. Test from outside the home network. If the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; a managed host or another network-access method may be required.
The Mac client crashes before reaching the menu
Disable CraftPresence and retry with Java 17. Confirm that Impossible Library is not being added by an old client profile, since the current notes say it was removed. If the crash persists, preserve the crash log and verify the client pack version before changing additional mods.
Zombies multiply until the server becomes unresponsive
Confirm that the 0.4.5 safeguard has not been overridden: hordeMultiplying should remain disabled unless you have deliberately tested the setting. Stop the server safely, restore a recent backup if the world has suffered damage, and investigate the offending configuration before reopening it.

Self-hosting provides the most control but makes you responsible for networking, backups, and maintenance. Managed hosting can reduce infrastructure work, yet you still need exact version matching, a tested backup plan, and a provider that supports this Forge modpack.
