BingGPT brought Microsoft’s Bing Chat experience into a standalone desktop window, but it was a community-built app—not Microsoft’s Windows taskbar feature. The two arrived in the same period in 2023 and offered different ways to reach Bing’s AI chat: one was part of an eligible Windows 11 update, while the other was a separate desktop wrapper with interface and export controls.
What BingGPT was
BingGPT was a third-party desktop application that presented Bing Chat outside a web browser. The project’s README described it as an app for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with users signing in to a Microsoft account before chatting. It was associated with GitHub user dice2o. The project README documents the app and its stated features; that historical documentation does not establish current support or safety.
Windows Central’s April 11, 2023 coverage characterized BingGPT as a wrapper around Bing Chat’s web view. The outlet reported versions for Windows—including Windows on ARM—Mac, and Linux, and described several controls intended to make the chat interface more convenient on a desktop. Windows Central’s contemporaneous report is a record of what it observed then, not a current feature audit.
Features reported in 2023
- Exporting a full conversation to Markdown, PNG, or PDF.
- Adjusting text size and choosing light, dark, or system themes.
- Using keyboard shortcuts.
- Running a desktop build on Windows, macOS, or Linux, according to the project documentation.
These were documented or reported features of the community app, not features Microsoft announced as part of Windows taskbar search.

How it differed from Microsoft’s Windows taskbar feature
Microsoft announced its own Bing integration in the Windows 11 taskbar on February 28, 2023. The feature put the new Bing in the typable Windows search box, combining Windows search with Bing search, answers, chat, and content creation. The Bing team described the goal as making it possible to “access the world’s information and generate content from the Windows taskbar, providing you with an AI copilot directly on your desktop.” Microsoft’s Bing Search Blog announcement gives the launch details.

| How people accessed it in 2023 | Install the Windows update and have access to the new Bing preview. | Install the separate app and sign in with a Microsoft account. |
| Distinctive documented functions | A taskbar/search-box entry point to Windows search and the new Bing. | Conversation export, appearance and text-size controls, and keyboard shortcuts, as reported in 2023. |

How the 2023 rollout unfolded
February 28: Bing arrived in the Windows 11 taskbar
Microsoft announced the taskbar integration as part of a Windows 11 update. People who already had access to the new Bing preview could get the feature by downloading the update; people still on the waitlist remained subject to preview admission. Microsoft specified eligible Windows 11 version 22H2 devices, a required reboot, and possible market variation. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog announcement describes the update and rollout.

April 11: coverage of the separate BingGPT app
Windows Central covered BingGPT as a way to use Bing Chat in a desktop application rather than a browser. Its account described the app’s export options, themes, text sizing, and shortcuts. This was a separate community project, not the Windows feature announced by Microsoft.

May 4: Bing Chat moved into Open Preview
Microsoft said the new Bing had entered Open Preview and removed the waitlist, with access by signing in using a Microsoft Account. Its May update also discussed features arriving or planned around that time, including chat history, sharing and export, visual answers, and third-party plugins. Those later developments should not be mistaken for features all included in the February taskbar announcement. Microsoft’s May 2023 Bing update distinguishes the expanded rollout and subsequent feature plans.

The Microsoft announcements establish that the taskbar integration was an official Windows feature in 2023, while the repository and contemporaneous coverage establish what BingGPT documented and what a reviewer reported about it at that time. They do not establish whether BingGPT is maintained today, whether its current builds are safe or compatible, or whether the app still works with Bing’s services. The existence of repository artifacts, including builds labeled 0.3.7, is not a recommendation to download or install them.

Accordingly, BingGPT is best understood as a historical example of a community desktop client for Bing Chat. The Microsoft taskbar feature and BingGPT shared a service context, but differed in ownership, installation, supported platform claims, and interface. Neither source trail supports a need to buy a particular computer or accessory to use or understand these software experiences.
