Yes. Microsoft said Bing crossed 100 million daily active users by early March 2023, about a month after it opened its AI-powered Bing preview. The company credited years of steady progress and a boost from more than one million new preview users—but it did not quantify how much of the milestone AI itself caused.

What Microsoft reported—and when

Microsoft announced its new AI-powered Bing and Edge preview on February 7, 2023. Bing was running on a next-generation OpenAI large language model customized for search, the company said. (Microsoft’s February 7 announcement.)

On March 8, Yusuf Mehdi, then Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, wrote that Bing had crossed 100 million daily active users. He described the milestone as following “a number of years of steady progress,” with “a little bit of a boost from the million+ new Bing preview users.” (Bing Search Blog, March 8, 2023.)

Microsoft later said the milestone had been reached by early March. In an April 19 release, it added that around one third of the millions using the new Bing preview were new to Bing. That proportion describes preview users, not all Bing users. (Microsoft News Center, April 19, 2023.)

Did AI cause Bing’s growth?

The timing links the milestone to the AI preview, and Microsoft said new preview users helped. But its statements do not establish that AI alone caused the full increase, or measure the portion of growth attributable to AI. The March account explicitly paired the preview boost with years of progress; it was not a controlled study of cause and effect.

Microsoft’s March post also characterized Bing as a “small, low, single digit share player.” Crossing 100 million daily users therefore did not mean Bing had become the leading search engine.

Daily users are not the same as Bing Chat users

The 100 million figure was Microsoft’s count of daily active users of Bing. It was not presented as a count of people using Bing’s AI chat feature. The company’s other figures measure different kinds of activity:

Microsoft-reported measure What it counts When reported
100 million daily active users Bing daily active users; not a separate AI-chat user count March 2023
Over 500 million chats in 90 days Chat activity, not daily users May 4, 2023
Over 200 million images created Images made with Bing Image Creator May 4, 2023
Fourfold increase in daily installs Daily installs of the Bing mobile app since launch—not daily active users May 4, 2023
Over 140 million daily active users Bing daily active users Microsoft’s FY2024 Q3 earnings call, April 2024

Microsoft shared the chat, image-creation and app-install figures in its May 4, 2023 blog post. Those measures show engagement with several Bing products and features, but they cannot be substituted for one another.

How many people use Bing now?

In April 2024, Microsoft reported that Bing had reached over 140 million daily active users on its FY2024 third-quarter earnings call. That is a later, dated company figure—not a current count for 2026. (Microsoft Investor Relations, FY2024 Q3 earnings-call transcript.)

The cited Microsoft statements do not provide a detailed daily-active-user methodology or independent auditing of the totals. Comparisons with other search engines or AI assistants also require matching the date, geography and definition of an active user, as well as whether a figure covers a search service or a specific chat product. The reported milestones alone do not establish a like-for-like ranking.
