Bill Gates published “The Age of AI has begun” on March 21, 2023, arguing that artificial intelligence could be as transformative as mobile phones and the Internet. The “seven-page” description comes from a contemporaneous NDTV report; Gates Notes lists the essay as a 14-minute read and says it sets out three principles for thinking about AI.

What Gates means by the “age of AI”

Gates frames AI as a foundational technology with potential effects across everyday life—not as a narrowly defined software product. Gates Notes describes the essay as covering productivity, health, education, risks, and problems. An excerpt attributed to the essay predicts that AI “will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other.” Those are Gates’s expectations, not evidence that these changes have already happened.

The title’s central comparison is explicit: Gates says artificial intelligence is “as revolutionary as mobile phones and the Internet.” In the essay, that analogy expresses the scale of change he anticipates. It should be understood as his argument, rather than as a measured comparison of technologies or proof of particular future outcomes.

Why he uses two personal examples

The graphical user interface in 1980

Gates recalls seeing a graphical user interface demonstrated by programmer Charles Simonyi in 1980. He says the encounter helped shape Microsoft’s agenda for years. The story gives his AI thesis a historical frame: he is comparing a new technology with earlier moments when computing changed direction.

OpenAI’s Advanced Placement Biology challenge

Gates also describes following OpenAI’s work since 2016 and challenging the team in mid-2022 to train an AI to pass an Advanced Placement Biology exam. He says the challenge included questions requiring critical thought, not just recall. The example explains what drew his attention to AI’s capabilities; it is not, by itself, proof of the essay’s broader predictions about society.

What the “seven-page missive” label means

NDTV used the “seven-page” description in a report published March 22, 2023, one day after the essay appeared. Gates Notes presents it as an article and gives an estimated reading time of 14 minutes. The two descriptions are different ways of characterizing the same online essay; “seven-page” is not the format label shown by Gates Notes.

What can—and cannot—be said about the essay’s three principles

Gates Notes says the essay offers three principles for thinking about AI. That summary does not enumerate them, and the available indexed material does not establish their wording or substance. It would therefore be misleading to supply a list or attribute specific recommendations to Gates without consulting the complete essay.
