Bike2 is a proposed electric-bike drive system built around a series-hybrid layout: the rider pedals a generator, and an electric motor drives the wheel. That separates the rider’s input from the wheel mechanically, unlike a conventional chain drive. EE Times described the concept in 2016, but its article does not establish that Bike2 is currently available to buy or prove it is more efficient than other e-bike systems.
What is Bike2?
Bike2 ApS co-founder Nils Sveje described the system in an interview published by EE Times on June 3, 2016. The article characterizes Bike2 as a series-hybrid powertrain for electric bikes. In this kind of layout, human pedaling supplies electrical power rather than turning the driven wheel through a chain.
EE Times placed the architecture in a wider vehicle context, noting that series-hybrid powertrains also appear in boats and aircraft. That comparison describes the general architecture; it does not mean Bike2 was demonstrated in those vehicles.

- The rider pedals. Instead of mechanically driving the rear wheel through a conventional chain, pedaling turns a generator.
- The generator supplies electricity. The rider’s mechanical effort is converted into electrical power within the system.
- An electric motor drives the bike. The motor propels the wheel, so the rider’s input reaches the wheel through an electrical path rather than a direct mechanical connection.
This arrangement changes the way power is transmitted, but the EE Times article does not provide a detailed component specification, control-system description, or measured account of how the assistance feels in use.
How does Bike2 compare with a chain drive or hub-motor e-bike?
The available reporting supports an architectural distinction, not a performance ranking. A chain-drive bicycle transfers pedaling force to the wheel mechanically. A series-hybrid design routes that effort through a generator and motor. A hub-motor e-bike also uses an electric motor to drive the wheel, but that label alone does not establish how the rider’s pedaling input is coupled to the system.

What applications did Bike2 propose beyond bicycles?
The interview framed Bike2 as a possible enabling technology, not just a bicycle component. It suggested that related powertrain concepts might be used alongside solar, wind, tidal, or wave energy systems, and even in small flying machines. These were possibilities discussed in the 2016 article, not evidence of completed deployments.
For bicycles, the article suggested the system could appeal to people who are less fit and support new vehicle designs. It also floated the idea that standardizing parts across different vehicles might help reduce costs. Those were expectations, not independently verified outcomes.

Can you buy a Bike2 system now?
The EE Times article is dated June 3, 2016, and does not establish present-day availability, production volume, certification, pricing, or an active sales channel. It is therefore not enough to confirm that a Bike2 system can currently be purchased. An electric bike conversion kit is a broader retrofit category, but the article provides no evidence that any such kit is compatible with Bike2.
