There is no universal winner. Compare the final cost of the exact appliance—including delivery, installation, haul-away, and required hookup parts—then check local availability, a credible delivery date, and who will handle service after the sale. Big-box inventory tools can make stock easier to search; an independent dealer may offer price matching, more precise delivery coordination, or in-house service. Confirm those terms with the specific seller.
How to compare the two types of appliance retailer
Compare the same model and the same scope of work at each store. A lower shelf price can be outweighed by delivery charges, installation, removal of the old appliance, or parts needed to connect the new one. Ask for an itemized quote so you can compare the amount you will actually pay.

Choose a big-box store when searchable inventory matters
If you want to locate a model across nearby stores or check delivery availability online, a big-box retailer’s inventory tools may be useful. Still, confirm the delivery date and service arrangements for your address rather than treating an online stock result as a complete delivery promise. Consumer Reports discusses chain inventory tools in its large-appliance shopping guidance.

Start with an independent dealer when timing or service matters
For an urgent replacement, Consumer Reports recommends starting with an independent dealer. Ask directly about arrival timing, delivery coordination, price matching, in-house service, and whether a loaner is offered. These options may be available, but they depend on the dealer and location.
Ken Miele, CEO of the Appliance Dealers Cooperative, told Consumer Reports: “You’ll get similar-to-exact pricing as a big-box store, but your service is probably going to be better.” That is Miele’s assessment, not a guarantee about every independent dealer or a substitute for checking its actual service terms. What retailer ratings and bargaining results can tell you
Consumer Reports’ large-appliance retailer article, updated November 10, 2025, reported survey experiences from 9,721 members who shopped for 12,970 large appliances between January 2023 and May 2024. It named Abt its top-rated large-appliance retailer for the 14th year and RC Willey next. It may also be worth asking whether the seller can improve the price. In the same 2025 Consumer Reports article, 21 percent of surveyed members said they tried negotiating on a large appliance. Of those who tried, 67 percent succeeded, with median savings of $123. These figures describe the surveyed members’ reported experiences, not a guaranteed discount.

A practical checklist before you place the order
- Match the model. Get a quote for the exact model from each retailer you are considering.
- Compare the complete cost. Include delivery, installation, haul-away, required hookup parts, and any other stated fees.
- Verify local availability. Ask whether the item is physically in stock or expected later, and get a realistic delivery date for your address.
- Clarify delivery details. Confirm the delivery window, who performs the delivery, and what the service includes.
- Get installation and removal in writing. Identify what work is included and which parts or extra services cost more.
- Ask who handles problems. Confirm how to request service after purchase, whether the retailer or manufacturer is responsible for the next step, and what support the seller itself provides.
- Ask about flexibility. Check price matching, package concessions, and—if useful—whether a loaner is available while a repair is underway.
Consumer Reports’ buying guide also advises comparing delivery, installation, service, fees, and price-match details. Retailer policies can change, so rely on the terms supplied for your own quote and order.
