Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff says Jalen Duren’s contract negotiations left no bitterness between the center and the team. Duren agreed to a reported five-year, $200 million deal and returned to the team’s facilities for a physical and other testing on October 2, 2026. The account is Bickerstaff’s: Duren was not made available to comment in the Associated Press report.
What happened in Duren’s contract negotiations
According to an Associated Press report by Dana Gauruder, Duren agreed to the five-year, $200 million contract on Thursday, October 1. The report describes him as a restricted free agent and says the deadline for a $9.6 million qualifying offer had passed that night.
The AP report says Duren could have signed a one-year qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent after the season. It also says he was eligible for a five-year deal worth as much as $287 million; the agreed contract was reported as fully guaranteed. These contract terms are attributed to the AP report and have not been independently verified here.

What Bickerstaff said about the relationship
Bickerstaff characterized the negotiations as a process rather than a source of lasting conflict, and said bringing Duren back was the team’s priority. “The most important thing for us was having JD back with us and I know JD wanted to be back,” he said, as quoted by the AP.

He also said, “There’s never been any bitterness between the group and how we feel about him and I know how he feels about us.” That is the coach’s public description of the relationship, not a direct statement from Duren; the report did not include the player’s account.
When Duren was expected to return to practice
Duren underwent a physical and other testing at the Pistons’ facilities on Friday, October 2. The AP report said he was expected to begin practicing as early as that weekend. That was a forecast at the time of publication, not confirmation that he subsequently practiced.

What Duren’s reported numbers say about his next step
The AP report lists Duren’s 2025–26 regular-season averages as 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, with 65% shooting from the field. It reports that he averaged 10.2 points per game in the playoffs as Detroit, the top seed, did not advance beyond the second round. The same report gives him 0.8 blocks per game and describes him as not yet a perimeter threat.

Those figures point to a development question for the coming season: can Duren carry more of his regular-season scoring production into the playoffs and add to his impact at the defensive end? The cited numbers offer only a partial picture; they do not establish a complete comparison of his defensive performance. Bickerstaff expects improvement, saying, “He hasn’t reached his ceiling, so there’s no reason why we wouldn’t expect him to take another step.” That is the coach’s expectation, not a guarantee.
