For a second playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the most rewarding challenge runs are usually simple rules that change how you explore, fight, or use Link’s abilities—not a pile of restrictions that makes ordinary progress frustrating. Try Pro HUD plus limited fast travel for a more deliberate exploration run, or pair a healing limit with unupgraded armor for tougher combat. For a bigger change, add one restriction on abilities or Zonai devices.
These are player-created rules, not official challenge modes. Nintendo describes experimentation and finding multiple solutions as central to the adventure, making a self-imposed change to your usual approach a natural way to revisit Hyrule.
Choose a challenge by what you want to change
Pick rules according to the part of the game you want to feel different. Exploration rules increase navigation friction; combat rules raise the stakes of encounters; upgrade limits slow character growth; and mechanics restrictions push you to solve problems with a different part of the game’s toolkit.

|---|---|---|
| Navigation | Use Pro HUD, limit fast travel, or both | You rely more on landmarks, memory, and deliberate travel. |
| Combat | Limit healing during combat or restrict armor | Taking damage carries more weight. |
| Progression | Ban armor upgrades or limit heart and stamina upgrades | You have fewer defensive or growth options. |
| Problem-solving | Restrict an ability or type of Zonai device | You must try different ways to traverse or overcome obstacles. |
Community discussions suggest rules such as no fast travel, Pro HUD, healing limits, armor restrictions, and limits on upgrades or sage abilities. Those are individual ideas, not evidence of a consensus about which run is best.

Exploration challenges: rely less on the interface and shortcuts
Pro HUD run
Turn on Pro HUD and use fewer on-screen prompts as you travel. This is an easy rule to adopt because it changes how much guidance you see without taking away Link’s abilities or blocking normal progression. It is a good starting point if you want a replay to feel fresher without adding a major difficulty constraint.
Limited fast travel
Decide in advance when fast travel is allowed. For example, you could permit it only from specified points, or allow it when continuing otherwise would stall progression. A no-fast-travel rule is also a community-suggested option, but it is a personal restriction rather than an official game setting.
Set exceptions before you begin instead of deciding in the moment. That keeps the rule understandable and avoids turning every return trip into a debate about whether it counts.

- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
Combat challenges: make recovery and defense matter
Restricted healing
Limit healing during combat or give yourself a small recovery allowance. Define what counts as combat before starting—for example, whether the restriction applies only while an enemy encounter is active—so you can follow the rule consistently. This is a community-suggested challenge, not a built-in mode.
Light armor or no armor upgrades
For a gentler version, leave armor upgrades off the table. For a tougher one, restrict which armor you can wear. These options reduce defensive support while leaving the rest of the game’s systems available.
Progression challenges: limit how Link grows
You can also limit heart or stamina upgrades, but decide which one—or whether both—before the run. Nintendo says four Light of Blessing items can be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a heart container or a stamina vessel. Restricting upgrades therefore changes how you allocate those rewards and the options available as you progress.

Mechanics challenges: break familiar problem-solving habits
Nintendo Australia writes, “Experimentation is at the heart of this adventure, and there are multiple ways to overcome problems you encounter while exploring Hyrule.” A mechanics-focused run leans into that idea by asking you to solve familiar problems differently.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Restrict one chosen ability or a class of Zonai devices.
- Before using a familiar construction, require yourself to try another solution first.
- Keep an exception for situations where a specific ability or device is required to progress.
These constraints are player-created ways to reshape a replay. Nintendo developer Hidemaro Fujibayashi described the idea behind the game’s building system this way: “By showing these ideas, I proposed that if Link had the ability to attach things together, we could create this new kind of gameplay using materials we already had available.”
Build a rule set you can actually follow
For a balanced replay, combine one exploration rule with one combat rule—for example, Pro HUD and restricted healing. If you want a more dramatic change, add one mechanics restriction rather than piling on several severe traversal bans. This is a practical way to mix the documented game systems and community-suggested rules, not a tested formula or an official recommendation.
- Write down when each rule applies, including exceptions for required story progression.
- Specify whether a healing restriction applies only during combat.
- Choose whether the rules last for the whole run or only selected regions.
- Keep the rules clear enough that they create interesting decisions without making normal progression opaque.
Do you need amiibo for a challenge run?
No. Compatible amiibo are optional: Nintendo Support says they can be scanned after you unlock the in-game amiibo rune. None of the challenge ideas here requires an amiibo.
