If you haven’t played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, start there: Nintendo’s official timeline places Majora’s Mask after it. If you have, choose based on what you want next: Twilight Princess for a darker game on the related Child Era path, The Wind Waker for a different timeline branch and setting, or Breath of the Wild followed by its direct sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, for open-ended exploration. For puzzle-solving with Princess Zelda as the lead, try Echoes of Wisdom.

What Zelda game should you play after Majora’s Mask?

Ocarina of Time is the clearest next pick if you want the story context: Nintendo’s official timeline places it before Majora’s Mask in the Child Era. The other recommendations are not all continuations of that story. Twilight Princess appears later on the related timeline path, while The Wind Waker belongs to a separate Adult Era branch.

If you have already played Ocarina of Time, decide by the kind of adventure you want. Choose Twilight Princess for a darker atmosphere, The Wind Waker for a contrasting setting, Breath of the Wild for open exploration, or Echoes of Wisdom for a puzzle-focused adventure starring Zelda.

Choose by what you liked about Majora’s Mask

If you want… Play… Why Keep in mind
Chronology and story context Ocarina of Time Nintendo places it immediately before Majora’s Mask in the Child Era. It is an older game. Availability depends on your region, platform, and current service catalog.
A darker atmosphere on a related timeline path Twilight Princess Nintendo places it in the Twilight Era associated with the Child Era path. That timeline relationship does not make it a direct sequel to Majora’s Mask.
A strong change of setting and timeline branch The Wind Waker It belongs to Nintendo’s Adult Era branch, distinct from the Child Era path. It is not a chronological follow-up to Majora’s Mask.
Open exploration and a newer two-game route Breath of the Wild, then Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo identifies Tears of the Kingdom as a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild. Play Breath of the Wild first if you have not already; Tears of the Kingdom builds on its Hyrule.
Puzzles and a different lead character Echoes of Wisdom Nintendo describes Zelda exploring, solving puzzles, and facing foes. Its appeal is a distinct puzzle approach, not a time-loop similarity claim.

Best choices after Ocarina of Time

Twilight Princess: for a darker Child Era path

Nintendo’s timeline places Twilight Princess in the Twilight Era associated with the Child Era branch. That makes it a natural chronology-minded follow-up after Majora’s Mask, but it is a separate adventure, not a direct continuation of Majora’s story. Pick it when atmosphere and the related timeline path matter more to you than staying with the same characters or plot.

#1 Best Overall
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - World Edition
  • Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
  • Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
  • Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
  • Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
  • Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways

The Wind Waker: for a deliberate change of direction

The Wind Waker sits in the Adult Era, a different branch of Nintendo’s timeline. It is a good choice when you would rather see a new setting than follow the Child Era path. Its position on the timeline is a reason to explore the series, not evidence that its story follows Majora’s Mask.

Take the open-world route with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom

For a move away from the older timeline sequence, start with Breath of the Wild. Then play Tears of the Kingdom: Nintendo describes it as a direct sequel that takes place in Hyrule after the previous game’s conclusion. Its official game page highlights travel across Hyrule’s land and skies and abilities for building weapons and ways to travel. This route suits players who want exploration and creative problem-solving more than a close match to Majora’s Mask’s structure.

Try Echoes of Wisdom for puzzles with Zelda as the lead

Echoes of Wisdom offers a different kind of Zelda adventure: Nintendo’s product page describes Princess Zelda exploring, solving puzzles, and defeating foes. It is a good pick if you want puzzles and a different protagonist, rather than another game chosen for its place in the Majora’s Mask timeline. Nintendo lists a physical Nintendo Switch edition.

Where to play Ocarina of Time

Nintendo of Canada lists Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask in its Nintendo 64 catalog for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That information is specific to Canada; check your region’s Nintendo catalog and membership terms before subscribing or planning a playthrough. Nintendo’s live US Zelda catalog can also change; its listing showed a future-dated November 5, 2026 release for Ocarina of Time as of October 7, 2026, so that entry should not be treated as proof the game is already available through that listing.
