There is no officially ranked best World War Z class or weapon build for Horde Mode. For a practical starting point, use Hellraiser or Exterminator when your team needs help clearing swarms, and consider Fixer when support is more valuable than another damage-focused role. Then adjust for your team, difficulty, and the weapons you have upgraded. These are role-based recommendations, not proven universal winners.
This guide reflects the Waves of Lead update released October 5, 2026. The update adds the tier-three BSG-12 Bullpup Shotgun and Gas Pipe Wrench, but does not publish comparative weapon-performance data.

How to choose a World War Z Horde class
World War Z: Aftermath has eight classes—Gunslinger, Hellraiser, Slasher, Medic, Fixer, Exterminator, Dronemaster, and Vanguard—each with its own perks and play style. Weapons have separate progression and upgrades, so a class choice does not by itself determine which weapon is strongest. The official Steam listing describes the class and weapon progression systems but does not rank builds.

Recent player discussion commonly suggests Hellraiser and Exterminator for horde clearing and Fixer for support. Treat that as community advice rather than an official tier list or measured comparison: players also note that preferred play style and the situation matter. The discussion does not establish a definitive best class.
#1 Best Overall
Starting builds by team need
For crowd clearing: Hellraiser or Exterminator
These are reasonable starting candidates when the team needs help controlling large groups. Build around the job of handling ordinary swarms, then check whether your chosen perks and equipment let you keep doing that without running short of ammunition or useful equipment. The community recommendations support trying these classes; they do not prove that either one clears faster or is always the stronger choice.
- Choose Hellraiser if its play style and available upgrades suit the way you want to manage groups.
- Choose Exterminator if you want a different class option for the same broad crowd-clearing need.
- Reconsider the setup if the team is struggling more with special enemies, survival, or supply use than with ordinary swarms.
For team support: Fixer
Consider Fixer when the group benefits more from support than from adding another crowd-focused player. Its value should be judged by what the team needs and how the class fits the rest of the lineup—not by an unsupported claim that it has the highest damage. If the group already has adequate support, a crowd-control or survival role may be a better fit.
Rank #2
- Play as both new and returning characters as you take the fight to the undead with a brutal new melee system, decimating zekes with unique moves, perks and dual Wield weapon options like the sickle and cleaver. Fend off new undead monstrosities.
- The Next generation of the zombie Swarm: play in glorious 4k|60 FPS. Endure endless waves of increasingly difficult zombies in the new horde mode XL game mode, featuring hundreds more zombies on screen than ever before possible.
- Deep progression and a new perspective: experience a heart-pounding new perspective with aftermath's immersive new first-person mode option.
- Level up eight unique classes: the gunslinger, hellraiser, Slasher, medic, fixer, exterminator, dronemaster, and all-new Vanguard class; each with their own perks and play styles.
- Customize your weapons to survive any challenge, and conquer new daily missions with special modifiers for bonus rewards.
For a changing team: switch during preparation
In Horde Mode, players can change class once during each preparation wave, according to Saber Interactive’s July 11, 2024 Battle of Arizona announcement. Use that limited chance to respond to what the group needs before the next wave rather than treating the first class selection as permanent.

Saber’s October 5, 2026 patch notes say, “Added two new Weapons, each with unique perks:” They identify the tier-three BSG-12 Bullpup Shotgun and the Gas Pipe Wrench heavy melee weapon. The notes confirm that these weapons were added; they do not show that either outperforms an existing option.
Rank #3
- Battle swarms of hundreds of zombies - the Swarm Engine seamlessly renders hordes of zombies in incredible firefights. Advanced gore systems offer gruesomely satisfying action.
- Coop story-driven campaigns - survive around the world, as unique groups tell their stories of perseverance.
- Fight other players for survival - several intense Player vs Player vs Zombies game modes complement the coop campaigns.
- Grow stronger - unlock powerful weapon upgrades and level 6 character classes to take on greater challenges.
Judge a weapon by the job you need it to do, and compare it with the alternatives you have upgraded:
- Against ordinary swarms: Consider how well the weapon fits the crowd-control role you need and the positioning it requires.
- Against special enemies: Consider whether your team has reliable coverage for threats that a swarm-focused choice may not address as well.
- Range and positioning: Match the weapon to where you can safely fight and the distances at which you expect to engage.
- Ammunition economy: Account for how often you can replenish ammunition and whether your team can sustain the setup across waves.
- Team composition: Avoid choosing every weapon and class for the same task if the group is left without support or other needed coverage.
The BSG-12 is a new tier-three shotgun option, not an automatic upgrade for every player. Compare it with your current shotgun choices using those practical criteria; the available patch notes do not provide a head-to-head test or performance ranking.

What changed in the Waves of Lead update
The October 5, 2026 update also added perks for heavy weapons. These are official patch additions, not evidence that any one class or weapon build is now best:
- Last exhaust for Chainsaw
- Pillbox for Machinegun
- Cluster bombs for MGL
- Dragon Breath Shells for Heavy Assault Shotgun
- Two-layer bullet for Payload Rifle
- White phosphorus for Multi-shot Rocket Launcher
Perk names alone are not enough to determine whether a heavy weapon fits your build. Check the current in-game description and unlock state before committing to a setup. Saber’s June 18, 2026 update added seven weapon perks—Triple Shot, Home Stretch, Dance Till The End, (Un)natural Magnetism, Bullets Cashback, To Your Health, and Delayed Explosion—and changed Horde Mode’s store and scoreboard UI. For detailed perk choices, use the descriptions currently shown in your game rather than relying on an old guide.
Adjust the build to mode and platform
Horde Mode support and Horde Mode XL support are not identical across platforms. Saber’s official Aftermath FAQ describes narrower platform support for Horde Mode XL than for standard Horde Mode, so check compatibility for your platform and edition before planning around XL.
Difficulty, available upgrades, team composition, and ammunition or equipment supply all affect whether a setup is practical. A crowd-clearing choice is less useful when your group’s main problem is another role, and a build that works with plentiful supplies may be harder to sustain when those supplies are constrained. Adjust to the actual wave and team rather than following a fixed “meta” label.
