For a WordPress business directory, choose a complete setup—not just a visual theme. ListingHive is a directory-focused theme designed to work with the HivePress plugin; HivePress and GeoDirectory are plugins that supply directory functionality and can be paired with a suitable theme. The available official documentation supports a closer comparison of these three options, but not a verified ranking of 18 products. This guide explains the practical choices and how to assess other directory WordPress themes without presenting unverified products, prices, or features as established facts.

What a WordPress directory theme does—and what it may not do

A theme controls much of a site’s presentation. Directory behavior—such as listing fields, search filters, member accounts, and front-end submissions—may come from a plugin, the theme, or a combination of both. Before choosing a design, identify which component provides each feature and whether it is included or requires a paid extension.

This distinction matters because a polished directory demo does not establish that the theme itself handles listing data, location search, paid listings, or bookings. Confirm the functionality in current vendor documentation and check that it works with the theme and other plugins you plan to use.

Three directory setups with documented differences

Option What the official listing establishes Best fit to investigate Important qualification
ListingHive theme with HivePress WordPress.org describes ListingHive as a theme for directories, classifieds, and marketplaces, designed to pair with HivePress for listing functionality. A project looking for a directory-oriented theme and plugin pairing. WordPress.org reported 9,000+ active installations on its listing, updated September 17, 2026; that count is not a measure of quality or user satisfaction.
HivePress plugin The official plugin listing documents custom fields, search filters, categories, user accounts, a template editor, email customization, and modular extensions. A directory that needs configurable listing data and a plugin-led setup. Check which extensions are needed for your particular features and whether they add cost.
GeoDirectory plugin The official listing describes business, city, job, real-estate, and classified directories; location-based discovery; front-end submissions; CSV tools; and optional premium add-ons. A directory where geographic discovery or varied directory types are central. Not every feature is included in the free plugin; the listing identifies premium add-ons.

How to choose the right setup

Start with the kind of listings you will publish

Write down the information each listing needs: for example, name, category, contact details, service area, photos, or other project-specific fields. Then verify that the plugin or theme supports those fields and the search filters visitors will need. HivePress’s official listing documents custom fields and filters; GeoDirectory’s describes several directory use cases. Confirm the exact configuration for your site before committing.

Decide how visitors will find listings

A small directory organized by category may not need map-based discovery. A city or regional directory may depend on location-aware search. If visitors need filters, maps, or proximity-based results, confirm each capability in current product documentation and establish whether it requires an extension or another plugin. GeoDirectory’s listing describes location-based discovery, but that does not mean every related feature is included in the free plugin.

Plan listing management and revenue features

If businesses will add or edit their own entries, verify the front-end submission and account-management flow. If you plan to charge for listings or offer bookings, check the specific payment, monetization, or booking tools required, along with their licensing and compatibility. Do not assume those capabilities are part of a theme simply because its demo shows them.

Calculate the full cost, not just the theme price

Compare the current cost of the theme, core plugin, required extensions, and renewals. The official sources cited here do not establish a comparable, verified total-price schedule across 18 directory products. Treat prices and feature claims in third-party comparisons as leads to verify on the vendor’s current product and licensing pages, not as settled purchasing facts.

What about other directory WordPress themes?

Commercial comparison material names ListingPro, Listeo, MyListing, Directorist, GeoDirectory, ListingHive, and PremiumPress as candidates. ThemeForest’s directory category also lists commercial directory themes, including Listeo. These listings can help build a shortlist, but they do not by themselves verify a product’s current price, included functionality, support, compatibility, or suitability for your directory.

For any candidate beyond the three options documented above, consult its current official vendor pages before relying on a feature or buying a license. Confirm that the product is actively maintained, supports your WordPress setup, covers your listing type, and provides the submission, discovery, and monetization features you need. Compare the full first-year and renewal costs for the same feature set.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Identify whether directory behavior comes from the theme, a plugin, or both.
  • Confirm support for your listing type, fields, categories, and required filters.
  • Check whether search needs location, maps, or proximity features.
  • Verify front-end submission and listing management if users will contribute entries.
  • Determine which monetization or booking capabilities require paid extensions or other plugins.
  • Confirm current compatibility, license terms, support arrangements, and renewal costs on official vendor pages.

WordPress.org’s product listings are useful starting points for ListingHive, HivePress, and GeoDirectory; they are not a substitute for checking the current terms and compatibility of the complete setup you intend to run.
