There is no single best WordPress directory plugin. The right choice depends on what your directory must do: accept submissions from the public, search by location, charge for listings, or manage members. This guide does not rank twelve tested products. It compares the named options that current sources list for business and listing directories, shows what each one covers natively and what needs an add-on, and gives you a checklist for matching a plugin to your project. Information is current as of October 7, 2026, and the features and prices mentioned should be confirmed on each vendor’s site before you buy, because they change.
Decide what the directory must do first
Write down the core workflow before you open any plugin page. Most comparison errors happen when a site owner assumes a feature is included when it is actually a paid extension. Check these requirements:
- Front-end submissions: Can visitors or members add listings from the public site, and can they edit or manage their own entries from an account dashboard?
- Search and fields: Do you need custom fields, filters, and category browsing that visitors can use?
- Location features: If the directory is location-heavy, confirm mapping, geolocation, and radius search. Do not assume every plugin includes them.
- Monetization: Do you need one-time listing fees, recurring memberships, featured placements, claimed listings, or a marketplace where payments pass between parties?
- Payments: Which gateway will you use, and does the plugin accept it natively or through WooCommerce or another payment component?
- Bulk data: Will you import hundreds of listings from a spreadsheet? Check for CSV import and export.
- Extras: Reviews, messaging, booking, business hours, or favorites, depending on your niche.
The shortlist at a glance
The table below uses only the details that the sources reviewed for this guide state. Where a cell says “Not stated,” the vendor or WordPress.org listing did not give that detail in the material checked, so look at the plugin’s own documentation before deciding.

Choosing a plugin by project type
Local business directory
For a directory of local businesses, the two questions that matter most are maps and paid claims. GeoDirectory is described as location- and map-oriented, which makes it a natural starting point when the map is central to the experience. Business Directory Plugin lists Google Maps and zip or city search as features that depend on the tier you choose, so confirm which tier includes them before you commit. HivePress covers local business listings and offers a free Claim Listings extension, which lets owners claim existing entries. Test a claim flow on a staging copy before you publish, since claim approval rules differ between plugins.
Member directory
A member directory depends on account management more than on search. HivePress’s documentation describes front-end listing submission and management, and its Memberships plugin adds recurring plans. Directorist describes guest submission, which you should turn off if members must register first. Confirm how each plugin handles profile fields, who can see which entries, and whether members can edit their own listings from a dashboard.
Rank #2
Classifieds site
Classifieds need fast submission, category browsing, and often featured or time-limited placements. Directorist includes classifieds among its directory types and bundles paid extensions for payments and recurring pricing. Classified Listing and Advanced Classifieds & Directory Pro are both listed on WordPress.org under the business-directory tag, but the sources reviewed for this guide do not state their feature sets, so review their documentation directly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Real estate listing site
Real estate listings usually need custom fields for price, size, and property type, plus radius search. Directorist lists real estate as one of its directory types and includes category and location search with radius filtering and map support, along with CSV import and export. Because real estate sites often hold large volumes of listings, check the import workflow and the cost of any extensions you will need before choosing.
Job board
Job boards add employer accounts, paid postings, and expiry dates. HivePress and Directorist both name job listings among their supported uses. In each case, paid postings require a payment path, so budget for the gateway and any extension that handles recurring or featured postings.
Marketplace
A marketplace goes beyond listings when buyers and sellers transact. HivePress describes service marketplaces and offers a Marketplace extension, along with messaging between users. If a marketplace requires booking or payouts, the sources reviewed do not establish how any listed plugin handles them, so confirm this with the vendor before you build.
Rank #4
Plan the full cost, not the plugin price
A free core plugin can still need a paid stack. Work through these components before you compare totals:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Core plugin: Note whether it is free, and which features sit behind a paid tier.
- Extensions: List every extension you need for payments, claims, reviews, memberships, and marketplace features.
- Payment component: Identify whether you need WooCommerce, GetPaid, or a native gateway, and whether that adds cost.
- Theme: Some bundles include premium themes. Check whether you need one.
- Renewal: Introductory prices and renewal prices can differ. Record both, plus the date you checked them.
At the time of the sources reviewed, Business Directory Plugin’s introductory and renewal prices were reported in a vendor comparison, but those amounts change, so confirm them on the vendor’s pricing page before you budget.

Performance depends on your hosting and setup
Directory sites can grow large, and a plugin’s limits are not the whole story. HivePress’s official FAQ on WordPress.org states: “There’s no such limit defined in HivePress itself, and while we prioritize performance and continuously optimize the HivePress framework with every update, directory website performance heavily depends on factors such as the hosting plan, website configuration, and third-party plugins.” Read that as a reason to test your own setup with realistic listing volumes, not as a promise of unlimited scale. No independent benchmark comparing these plugins was found in the sources reviewed.
Checks to run before you install
- Open the plugin’s official product page and confirm current features, plan contents, and prices.
- Check the WordPress.org page for the last update date and the WordPress version it lists as tested. On October 7, 2026, the business-directory listings showed “Tested with 7.1.2,” which is a compatibility marker, not a support guarantee.
- Check that the vendor is still shipping updates and responding to support requests.
- Install on a staging copy, build one real listing flow end to end, and test a payment in test mode if you plan to charge.
Plugins to verify before you consider them
One 2026 vendor comparison states that Connections Business Directory was closed on WordPress.org in January 2025 because of a security issue and is no longer available for download. We could not confirm that against an official WordPress.org notice, so check the plugin’s status on WordPress.org or contact the maintainer before you treat it as an option or install it.
How to choose
Start with your project type, not the plugin list. For a location-driven directory with multiple sites or a map at its center, GeoDirectory is the most direct fit based on the sources reviewed. For a flexible build that may grow into jobs, rentals, or a marketplace, HivePress offers the broadest described range, with the cost of its extensions added to the plan. For a multi-type directory that wants paid features bundled in one plan, Directorist’s bundled model is worth pricing out. For a business directory with tiered paid features and Stripe or PayPal support, Business Directory Plugin should be compared tier by tier. In every case, the decision rests on the total cost of the configuration you need and on a test of your own listing flow.
This guide is based on vendor documentation, WordPress.org listing data, and comparison material. It does not include hands-on testing of these plugins.
