For a similar mix of hidden letter paths and a shared theme, try Strandom or Strings – Word Search. If you mainly want a word-search grid, choose Word Search; if you want another kind of daily word challenge, NYT Connections, Spelling Bee, Waffle, and Letter Boxed are related but use different mechanics.

NYT describes Strands as a daily game to “Uncover hidden words and reveal the theme.” The alternatives below are grouped by what you may want to keep: connected paths, themed solving, a daily routine, or simply more word puzzles.

What makes a game like NYT Strands?

Strands combines a letter grid, hidden words, and a theme that you infer as you solve. A detailed description from the independent site Strands.Game says its implementation uses a 6×8 grid: players connect letters vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, and can change direction within a word. Its theme word, the “spangram,” names the theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. The site also says that finding three valid non-theme words unlocks a hint highlighting one theme word. These are Strands.Game’s descriptions; the site says it is not affiliated with NYT, so they should not be read as NYT’s own rules wording.

Those mechanics are useful comparison points. An alternative may preserve connected letter paths but drop the theme, or preserve a daily theme challenge while using no letter grid at all. The closest fit depends on which part of Strands you want more of.

Closest alternatives with themed letter paths

Strandom: choose a fandom theme

Beebom describes Strandom as a game of connected hidden words linked by a shared connection, with players choosing fandom themes. It also reports that players can earn coins to unlock hints. That makes Strandom a candidate if choosing the subject matter matters more to you than matching every Strands rule. These details are reported by Beebom, not based on a hands-on comparison.

Strings – Word Search: an iPhone and iPad app

Apple’s U.S. App Store listing describes Strings – Word Search as combining word search with connect-the-dots-style paths through a letter grid, with different topics and themes. The listing marks the app as free with in-app purchases. That is the U.S. store listing’s access and payment information; availability and terms may differ in other regions.

Word-search grids without the full Strands format

Word Search: scan a grid for listed words

Beebom describes Word Search as a scattered-letter grid with a provided word list. A puzzle can have a common theme, but this option is not described as a daily puzzle and can be shuffled. It suits players who like finding words in a grid but do not need Strands’ spangram mechanic.

Word Salad: a smaller themed grid

Beebom describes Word Salad as using a 4×4 grid where connected words share a theme. It has no spangram, and letters generally disappear after use, though some reuse is possible. Its smaller grid and different letter-use rules make it a thematic path puzzle rather than a direct Strands substitute.

Cell Tower: focus on letter chaining

Beebom describes Cell Tower as a larger letter-chaining grid without a shared theme or spangram. Consider it if tracing paths through letters is the main appeal and theme deduction is less important.

Daily word games with different mechanics

NYT Connections: group visible words

Connections is the closest option here for a daily theme-based solve, but Beebom describes it as grouping visible words rather than tracing hidden words through a letter grid. Choose it for category deduction, not for Strands-style paths.

Spelling Bee: build words from a letter set

Spelling Bee asks players to form words from a set of letters. Beebom notes that it has no common theme, so the challenge is word formation rather than uncovering themed paths.

Waffle: swap letters in a grid

Waffle is a grid puzzle built around swapping letters, according to Beebom’s comparison. It offers a visual word puzzle, but not the hidden-word tracing that defines Strands.

Letter Boxed: chain words by rules

Letter Boxed asks players to chain words under edge and word-to-word rules. It is another daily wordplay option, but its constraints differ substantially from following connected paths to reveal a theme.

How to choose

If you want… Try… What changes from Strands
Connected hidden words with a theme you can choose Strandom Beebom reports selectable fandom themes and coin-based hints; it does not establish a match for Strands’ spangram or daily format.
Themed paths in an iPhone or iPad app Strings – Word Search Apple’s U.S. listing describes themed path play; it does not establish identical Strands rules.
A straightforward word-search grid Word Search A word list guides the hunt; it is not described as a daily puzzle and may be shuffled.
A smaller themed path grid Word Salad Uses a 4×4 grid, no spangram, and generally removes used letters.
Letter paths without theme deduction Cell Tower Beebom describes a larger grid without a shared theme or spangram.
A daily theme puzzle without letter paths NYT Connections Groups visible words instead of finding hidden words in a grid.

For Android, Google Play’s U.S. word-games catalog includes titles such as Wordscapes Search. A category listing establishes that word-game options are present, but it does not show which games reproduce Strands’ themed hidden-path mechanic; check each game’s listing for its actual rules.

Sources and availability caveats

NYT’s games catalog supplies its concise description of Strands as a daily game. The grid details above come from Strands.Game, which identifies itself as independent and unaffiliated with NYT. Beebom’s May 2026 comparison is a secondary source for the alternative-game mechanics, not a definitive ranking or a hands-on test. Apple and Google Play listings are publisher or storefront metadata, and their catalogs, prices, and in-app purchase information can change.
