The best women’s running shoe depends on what you run and how you like a shoe to feel. Tom’s Guide’s September 14, 2026 roundup names the Nike Vomero Plus its best overall pick, the New Balance 1080v15 its beginner choice, the adidas Adizero Evo SL its speed option, the Puma Velocity Nitro 4 its all-rounder, and the ASICS Novablast 6 its cushioned pick. Those are that publication’s judgments, not universal rankings. Use the comparison below to build a shortlist around fit, cushioning, support, and surface.
Quick comparison of the 2026 picks
The weights and heel-to-toe drops below are those reported by Tom’s Guide in its 2026 roundup. They are useful for comparing these listed models on a consistent basis, but they do not determine whether a shoe will feel right for you.
| Model | Best suited to | Weight and drop | Key fit or ride note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nike Vomero Plus | Everyday road running with maximum cushioning | 8.5 oz; 10 mm drop | Extra-wide availability; not designed for maximum stability |
| New Balance 1080v15 | Beginner training and versatile runs | 9.2 oz; 6 mm drop | Multiple widths; soft ride, but less suited to intervals and sprints |
| adidas Adizero Evo SL | Speed sessions and faster daily workouts | 7.9 oz; 6 mm drop | Lightweight and bouncy; no carbon plate and less stable than some alternatives |
| Puma Velocity Nitro 4 | General training across roads and some light trails | 8.7 oz; 10 mm drop | Reported to grip on wet roads and light trails; fit may run narrow |
| ASICS Novablast 6 | Cushioned daily training and longer runs | 9.2 oz; 8 mm drop | Springy ride; not aimed at personal-best racing |

Which shoe fits your kind of running?
For everyday road miles: Nike Vomero Plus
Tom’s Guide’s overall pick is the Vomero Plus, a highly cushioned road shoe with a breathable upper and extra-wide availability. It may suit runners who want a soft feel for regular miles, but its cushioning should not be mistaken for maximum stability: the roundup specifically says it is not built for that purpose. It is also not the guide’s trail choice.
#1 Best Overall
- The mesh upper offers a comfortable, breathable feel.
- The foam midsole delivers intuitive cushioning through comfort-focused rocker geometry.
- The outsole has an intuitive Nike design and flex grooves in the forefoot that create a comfortable and cushioned effect as you run.
- Touch points at the heel and tongue create a natural feel as you take the shoes on and off.
- Mesh on upper is more breathable than the Revolution 7, helping keep you cool.
For starting a running routine: New Balance 1080v15
The 1080v15 is Tom’s Guide’s beginner-oriented pick. The reviewer describes it as soft, comfortable, and versatile, while cautioning that it may not be the best match for intervals or sprints. New Balance’s women’s running-shoe guidance covers road, trail, and track options across multiple widths; that range information does not mean every 1080v15 version is intended for every surface. Check the specific shoe’s description.
For faster workouts: adidas Adizero Evo SL
Tom’s Guide describes the Evo SL as a lightweight, bouncy daily trainer that can handle faster workouts. It has no carbon plate and is less stable than some alternatives, so its speed-oriented label does not make it a race shoe for every runner. Runner’s World also recommends it for speedwork, but reports different weight and drop measurements. The table uses Tom’s Guide’s figures consistently rather than mixing measurements from separate publications.
For one shoe across varied training: Puma Velocity Nitro 4
Tom’s Guide calls the Velocity Nitro 4 an all-rounder and reports grip on wet roads and light trails. That is not the same as a dedicated trail shoe: terrain, outsole, and the specific product’s intended use still matter. The reviewer also warns that the fit can run narrow, and that the shoe is not built for stability or maximum cushioning.

For a springy, cushioned daily trainer: ASICS Novablast 6
The Novablast 6 is Tom’s Guide’s cushioned pick. The roundup describes it as a springy daily trainer suited to longer runs and general training, rather than a shoe aimed at personal-best racing. If race-day performance is your priority, compare shoes designed for that purpose instead of choosing by cushioning alone.
How to choose between cushioning, neutral feel, and support
Cushioning describes how a shoe feels underfoot; it does not by itself tell you how stable or supportive the shoe will feel. A high-stack or soft shoe is not automatically a stability shoe, and a model’s category is not a diagnosis or a guarantee against injury.
For a concrete supportive-road example, Nike positions the Structure 26 as a guided daily trainer for road runners and lists regular and extra-wide widths. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent ranking. The brand page also hosts a testimonial from 1,500m US Champion Sinclaire Johnson, who praises its support and comfort; treat it as an attributed endorsement, not a test result. Nike’s product-specific guidance says most runners should start with their usual size, while those seeking more room for longer runs or thicker socks may prefer half a size up. Do not apply that advice automatically to other Nike models.

Check fit before deciding
New Balance advises that a running shoe should feel snug but not tight, with enough room to wiggle your toes. Its guide suggests roughly half to a full thumb’s width between the front of the shoe and your big toe. Treat this as a fitting starting point, not a substitute for trying the shoe on and moving in it.
- Check toe room while standing, not only while seated.
- Look for a secure heel hold without pressure or rubbing.
- Try the width that matches your foot; New Balance says it offers wide and extra-wide women’s running shoes, and some models from other brands also have width options.
- Walk or run in the shoe if possible. A size that seems right at rest may feel different once you move.
- Match the shoe to its intended surface: road, trail, track, and race shoes are not interchangeable categories.
New Balance’s women’s running-shoe guide covers fit, intended use, cushioning, stability, and its width options.
Rank #4
- Athletic mesh upper with durable leather overlays for added dimension & midfoot support
- Charged+ midsole cushioning provides unmatched softness & all-day comfort
- Durable rubber outsole provides traction & durability with strategically-placed flex grooves for proper toe-off, Upper contains at least 30% recycled content

What weight and heel-to-toe drop can—and cannot—tell you
Weight may help distinguish a lightweight speed-oriented trainer from a more cushioned daily shoe, while drop is the height difference between the heel and forefoot. Neither number tells you on its own whether the shoe will fit comfortably, feel stable, or suit your running mechanics. The figures in the comparison table are Tom’s Guide’s reported specifications; Runner’s World publishes different measurements for the Evo SL, so avoid comparing numbers from different outlets as if they came from one measurement method.
Use specifications to narrow choices, then prioritize fit and the sensation of running in the shoe. A numerical difference is not a promise of faster running, more comfort, or reduced injury risk.
