For the simplest hands-free shutter, choose a Bluetooth selfie clicker; if you also need to position your iPhone, choose a selfie stick or tripod with a detachable remote. An Apple Watch or certain newer AirPods can also trigger the camera if you already own compatible hardware. These options differ in framing, compatibility, and what you need to carry.
Which iPhone selfie remote should you choose?

When a Bluetooth selfie clicker makes sense
A small Bluetooth clicker is the most direct choice if your main need is to trigger the shutter while the iPhone is set up elsewhere. It is separate from the phone and does not hold or position it, so you will need a stable surface, stand, or another person to frame the shot. Basic shutter-only clickers also do not provide a live preview.
Apple says iPhone selfies can be taken by tapping the Camera shutter or pressing either volume button. That makes remotes that act like a volume-button press a plausible option, but it does not establish compatibility for every remote, camera app, or setup. Check the specific clicker’s compatibility information and the app you plan to use before buying.
When to choose a selfie stick or tripod with a remote
If you need both a way to position your iPhone and a hands-free shutter, a bundled selfie stick or tripod is more useful than a clicker alone. A detachable remote lets you trigger the camera without returning to the handle, which can help with group photos and fixed-position shots.

Apple’s US accessory store lists the ShiftCam SnapStand Selfie Magnetic Selfie Stick and Tripod with a detachable Bluetooth remote. The listing showed $59.95 when returned by search; that is a time-sensitive US price snapshot, not a guaranteed current price. Check the live listing for availability and price.
Using an Apple Watch as an iPhone camera remote
If you already own an Apple Watch, Apple’s Camera Remote feature can control the iPhone camera without buying a separate clicker. Apple documents shutter, timer, flash, and review functions. The Watch must be within normal Bluetooth range of the iPhone—about 33 feet (10 meters), according to Apple Support’s Camera Remote guide. That range applies to this Apple Watch feature; it should not be assumed for generic Bluetooth remotes.

AirPods camera control: supported models only
Apple Support says: “You can use AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, or AirPods Max 2 to take a photo or start recording a video in supported camera apps on your iPhone or iPad.” Apple requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later and notes that availability may vary by country or region. See Apple’s supported camera apps instructions for setup and details. Because the feature is limited to the listed models and supported apps, do not assume that any AirPods can trigger the camera.
Can a second iPhone or iPad act as the remote?
A second-device camera app is an alternative if you want remote controls or a live view on another Apple device. It is not a pocket Bluetooth clicker: it depends on having a second device and suitable software. The Remote Shutter: camera connect App Store listing describes this kind of setup.

What to check before buying a Bluetooth remote
- Phone positioning: Decide whether you only need a shutter control or also need a stick or tripod to hold the iPhone.
- Compatibility: Verify the exact remote model, iPhone, iOS version, and camera app combination. Apple’s volume-button instructions do not guarantee that every remote works in every app.
- Framing: A simple clicker triggers the shutter but does not show you a live preview. Consider an Apple Watch or second-device app if remote framing or shot review matters.
- Working distance: Use a range only when the maker documents it for that specific product or feature. Apple’s approximate 33-foot (10-meter) figure is for Apple Watch Camera Remote, not a category-wide Bluetooth specification.
- What you already own: A compatible Watch or AirPods may provide camera control without another accessory. A separate clicker or a stick/tripod is more useful when you need an independent physical control or phone support.
Apple’s selfie instructions document the Camera shutter and iPhone volume buttons as ways to take a selfie. For Bluetooth remotes, compatibility with a specific third-party device and camera app still needs to be verified with that device’s information.
