The best wired headphones depend on where you listen and what you plug them into. For an open-back option aimed at quiet-room listening, the Sennheiser HD 560S is a sourced candidate; for closed-back studio use, consider the Sennheiser HD 480 PRO; and for a foldable portable design, the HD 400S is one example. None is a universal winner: fit, sound leakage, microphone support, connector, and whether your source can drive the headphones all matter.
How to choose wired headphones
Start with your listening environment, then check the connection and source. Wired headphones can offer low-latency listening and, with traditional passive analog models, playback without a battery. Those benefits do not apply identically to every product: USB headphones and wireless models used in wired mode may have different power requirements. RTINGS discusses these trade-offs in its 2026 wired-headphone guide, while What Hi-Fi? covers wired-mode caveats in its 2026 guide.
- Choose open-back over-ears for a quiet space if you value an airy presentation and do not need to contain sound. They leak audio and provide little isolation.
- Choose closed-back headphones or in-ear monitors when you need more isolation or want to reduce sound leakage.
- Check the actual connector. A 3.5 mm plug will not fit a device without a headphone jack; an appropriate USB-C or Lightning audio adapter may be necessary. Home audio gear may use a 6.3 mm jack.
- Confirm microphone and control support. The cable must carry microphone input if you need a headset mic, and the device adapter must support the microphone and remote functions you expect.
- Check output capability, not just plug fit. Some headphones may need a headphone amplifier or audio interface to reach a useful listening level. Impedance alone is not enough to determine how well a particular phone will drive a model.
Wired headphone picks by use
| Model | Intended use | Acoustic design and isolation | Connector and included adapters | Cable removable? | Microphone or controls | Source-drive requirements | Current verified price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser HD 560S | Budget audiophile listening in a quiet space; Crutchfield named it its budget audiophile pick in its June 3, 2026 guide, and RTINGS includes it among its 2026 wired over-ear picks. | Open-back; sound can leak, and it is not the choice for isolation. | Not stated in the cited guide summaries; check the exact model bundle and your source connection. | Not stated in the cited guide summaries. | Not stated in the cited guide summaries; do not assume it has a microphone. | Check source capability for the exact model and listening level. | Not stated; no current price was established by the cited sources. |
| Sennheiser HD 480 PRO | Professional studio listening where a closed-back design and serviceable parts are useful. | Closed-back; intended to provide isolation compared with open-back designs. | Manufacturer lists 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm connectors. Confirm the exact cable and bundle for your purchase. | Yes; manufacturer lists a detachable cable. | Microphone or inline controls are not stated on the manufacturer page. | Manufacturer specifications list 130 ohms and sensitivity of 107 dB SPL at 1 Vrms (98 dB SPL at 1 mW). These figures do not establish that every phone can drive it adequately; check the source and desired level. | Not stated; no current price was established by the manufacturer page. |
| Sennheiser HD 400S | Portable everyday over-ear use where folding and a cable remote are useful. | Closed-back, foldable over-ear design. | Manufacturer lists a detachable, single-sided 3.5 mm cable with a one-button remote. Confirm regional availability and the exact bundle. | Yes; Sennheiser lists the model-specific RCS400 replacement cable. | One-button remote is listed; verify microphone behavior for the exact model and device. | Check that your source has a compatible 3.5 mm connection or use a suitable adapter. | Not stated; no current price was established by the manufacturer page. |
The HD 560S recommendations are category picks published by RTINGS and Crutchfield, not a claim that it suits every listener. The HD 480 PRO and HD 400S details above come from Sennheiser’s product pages: HD 480 PRO and HD 400S.

Phones with Lightning or USB-C
If your phone has no headphone jack, a 3.5 mm headphone usually needs a compatible Lightning or USB-C audio adapter. For a headset with a microphone, verify that both the headphone cable and adapter support microphone input and any inline controls you need. A plug that produces audio does not necessarily confirm full microphone or remote compatibility.

Computers and home audio
Check whether your computer, interface, or receiver has a 3.5 mm or 6.3 mm headphone output. A 6.3 mm adapter may solve a plug-size mismatch, but it does not add amplification. If you use a DAC, headphone amp, or audio interface, check its output capability against the headphone and the listening level you want.
Microphones, ANC, and battery power
Do not assume a wired headphone includes a microphone or active noise cancellation. What Hi-Fi? describes wired ANC models as uncommon, and some wireless headphones that accept a cable still need battery power for wired playback or active features. Confirm the exact model’s operating behavior before buying; “wired” does not always mean fully passive.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Comfort, leakage, and long-term ownership
Fit is personal, so where possible try headphones before committing to long sessions. Closed-back designs are a practical starting point for shared rooms and travel, while open-back models are better reserved for spaces where both outside sound and headphone leakage are acceptable. For repairability, look up replacement parts by exact model and generation rather than assuming cables or pads are interchangeable. Sennheiser lists replacement cables and pads for the HD 480 PRO and an RCS400 cable for the HD 400S on their respective product pages.

What to decide before you buy
- Choose the form factor and acoustic design that fit your environment: open-back for a quiet space, closed-back or in-ear when isolation matters.
- Write down your device’s audio output—3.5 mm, 6.3 mm, Lightning, USB-C, or another connection—and verify the required cable or adapter.
- If you need calls or controls, confirm microphone and remote support for the complete headphone-and-adapter combination.
- Check whether the model is passive analog, USB, or a wireless model with wired mode, and whether it needs power.
- Review the manufacturer’s specifications and available replacement parts for the exact model and generation. If you use a phone or portable source, confirm it can reach your preferred listening level.
